Job Description

Working/Functional Title

Senior International Student and Scholar Advocate

Position Summary

The Senior International Student and Scholar Advocate works under the supervision of the OISS Director to assist international students and scholars through advising advocacy outreach and support. This position works with complex and time-intensive cases developing and implementing individualized interventions with approval from the OISS Director. The Senior International Student and Scholar Advocate develops and implements programs for preventative measures to support academic success and other student success initiatives. The Senior International Student and Scholar Advocate collaborates closely with other units on campus and serves on several university committees including the university wide care and intervention team. This position assists the OISS Director in responding to crisis situations and may require occasional work outside the normal business hours including local travel as needed and requested by the Director

Hybrid work statement: OISS is currently operating under a hybrid modality structure with staff working three days in person and two days remotely. This structure is subject to change at any time.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provides advising and advocacy for international students based on assessment of needs including but not limited to navigating academic programs utilizing campus and community resources resolving funding issues addressing health concerns and resolving policy issues
  • Develops and implements preventative programming for at risk international graduate and undergraduate students in collaboration with campus partners; represents OISS on campus and community committees related to student advocacy and student success
  • In collaboration with the OISS Director manages international student and scholar crisis interventions including collaboration with internal and external stakeholders
  • Serves as a Designated School Official (DSO) and an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO); advises international students and scholars on immigration matters related to F and J statuses interprets complex U.S. immigration regulations and policies/procedures concerning F/J
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree work in International Education and Guidance Counseling with relevant course work in English a foreign language and/or international studies; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in academic counseling a familiarity with immigration regulations and proficiency in a foreign language; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

US Permanent Resident or US Citizen is required in order to serve as a Designated School Official and Alternate Responsible Officer in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).

Demonstrated experience in dealing with issues related to international students especially regarding student adjustment academic success financial and health insurance issues; experience as a Designated School Official and/or Alternate Responsible Officer; experience conducting interventions and outreach to an international student population; proficiency in a second language; experience presenting seminars and workshops
