OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB: To oversee the operation of the day-to-day running of the laboratory Chemical Treatment Plant and Waste Transfer Station.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Analytical Duties
- Carry out all analyses of incoming waste to all treatment plants. Tests include metal determination (AA spectrophotometer) flash point determination COD measurements PH measurements suspended solids calorimeter measurements and titration for determination of acid and alkali strengths.
- Identification of drummed loads on the site as per paperwork and supervising the offloading of such materials into designated areas.
- Testing and assigning disposal routes to new waste streams under the supervision of the Treatment Plant Manager.
- Completion of any projects that need a series of lab-scale analysis reports carried out.
- Conduct all analyses of outgoing waste including metal determination (AA spectrophotometer) flash point determination COD measurements pH measurements suspended solids analysis and calorimeter measurements.
- Completion of written records of results and the filing of these records according to Company procedures.
- Controlling the databases in the transfer station to enable tracking of materials through the site under the supervision of an analytical chemist.
- Updating computer records of all analyses into COD databases and filing of paper records.
- Rotation of the keep samples cleaning of sample bottles and keeping the sample box stocked for drivers.
- Maintain a clean safe condition in the laboratory. This involves general cleaning and maintenance of the laboratory and keeping glassware clean and tidy.
- Calibration of lab equipment.
- Reordering of chemical and general PPE stock items for the laboratory.
- Controlling the databases in the transfer station to enable tracking of materials through the site under the supervision of an analytical chemist.
- Willingness to work in an outdoor environment throughout the year.
- Bulk and blending of waste in the transfer station after authorisation from the Treatment Plant Manager if necessary carry out trial blend on a small scale first. Blending records must be completed during the blending process and records filed.
Engineering
- Operation of the chemical neutralisation plant under the supervision of the Treatment Plant Manager.
- Oversee the operation of the Chemical Treatment Plant and identify and work to resolve any issues with pumps valves and pipework.
- Read and interpret engineering diagrams of tanks and pipework for example AutoCAD schematics to determine various specifications.
- Help in the maintenance of all treatment plants and will involve maintenance of pumps valves and pipework and this may involve cleaning washing and jetting.
- Ensure maintenance equipment and tools are cleaned securely replaced and routinely maintained to ensure their proper function and safety and report any defective equipment immediately.
- Maintain clean safe conditions in the yard around the Transfer Station and Chemical Treatment Plant.

- To carry out such further tasks and duties may from time to time be delegated by your Line Manager.
- Be prepared to work overtime from time to time.

- Help design new pipework or redesign old pipework to make the operation more efficient.
- Help the maintenance department with engineering duties when and where needed.

ATTAINMENTS
Degree level or equivalent in chemistry or a similar science subject for example chemical engineering.
Plant Engineering experience working on pumps valves and pipes.
Any waste experience or environmental qualifications. Forklift licence advantageous
