The AWS Sustainability Science and Innovation team is hiring a Sr. Sustainability Scientist. AWS Sustainability Science and Innovation (AWS-SSI) develops world-class methodologies and models that enable data-driven decision making to enhance the near and long-term sustainability performance of AWS infrastructure and services. We use these models to develop derisk and accelerate the adoption of innovative sustainable technologies by leveraging strategic external partnerships leading applied research and building partnerships across AWS teams. By continually pushing the boundaries of sustainability science we will strive to be a catalyst for a sustainable transformation across our customers our partners and the world. This role will own developing scalable methods and models to assess and improve the environmental impacts of AWS data centers and cloud computing services. This role will focus on modeling the operations of data centers including all energy activities to support AWS data centers.
The ideal candidate will have industry experience in driving process-based Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) and possess a strong understanding of the GHG Protocol and carbon accounting practices and have a detailed knowledge of energy generation technologies. The candidate should be comfortable working with imperfect data identifying sources of uncertainty and finding public data to fill the gaps where needed. The successful candidate must have strong analytical skills and the ability to apply systems thinking to complex fast moving problems. The successful candidate will act as a subject matter expert including designing research gathering data interpreting results and developing metrics and reports. The candidate will coordinate with cross-functional project teams in gathering and analyzing large amounts of data.
Key job responsibilities
In this role you will be responsible for:
* Serving as an AWS subject matter expert in Sustainability
* Developing Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodologies and GHG accounting practices to ensure AWS has an accurate and credible basis for sustainability efforts.
* Conducting LCAs including research data collection modeling data analysis data visualization and reporting to quantify environmental impacts of our data centers and cloud computing services
* Developing reports dashboards and metrics which distill complex data into actionable insights to inform improvements
* Building and developing relationships with internal and external stakeholders to drive programs to completion
* Work closely with software engineering teams to drive real-time model implementations and new features

- Advanced degrees (MS/PhD) in data analysis engineering discipline and/or sustainability focused field.
- 5 years of work experience and subject matter expertise in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol and/or other carbon accounting measures
- PhD in engineering discipline or other sustainability science related technical fields;
- 5 years applying Life Cycle Assessment GHGP and other sustainability assessment methods and/or driving data-driven research and sustainability improvements;
- 5 years applying LCA and carbon footprinting methodologies to the energy domain;
- Experience with LCA modeling and databases (ecoinvent etc.);
- Experience with prototyping parameterized models using scripting languages and AWS services;
- Demonstrated knowledge of energy generation technologies;
- Demonstrated knowledge of data structures and experience in working with large and messy datasets

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $143300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $247600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge skills and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
