General Summary
Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) seeks dynamic and committed Academic Communities Advisors for each of the three specialized communities at West Sr. High and Central High School: STEM Arts and Global Studies. These advisors play a pivotal role in cultivating student engagement fostering academic and real-world connections and promoting a vibrant learning community within their field of focus.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead and organize student meetings. Connect with field-related community partners mentors or organizations to foster ongoing partnerships and engagement opportunities.
- Serve as the primary advisor to a student leadership board for the Academic Community.
- Track student membership and maintain accurate enrollment records for counselors.
- Communicate with counselors and school administration regarding students academic recognition within the community for graduation transcripts and diploma honors designations.
- Coordinate external experiences (e.g. field trip site visit college tour) throughout the school year that enhance students understanding and exposure in the relevant field.
- Organize guest speakers or expert presentations to come into the school throughout the school year to enrich students experiences within the relevant field.
- Oversee communication within the community for updates upcoming events and highlights.
- Promote the Academic Communities program within TCAPS and the broader community supporting recruitment and visibility efforts.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree required; relevant content area preferred.
- Experience in education student advising or related leadership roles.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of the communitys focus area
- Ability to work collaboratively with staff students families and external partners.
Preferred Qualifications
- Valid teaching certification or counseling experience
- Existing professional network related to the content area.
- Experience organizing student programs field trips or community partnerships.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Must be able to report on a regular and consistent basis.
- Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
- Duties include frequent walking and physical activity as well as use of hands and arms for signaling and light lifting/carrying. Must have the ability to move about the classroom/building and school property including bending pushing/pulling lifting twisting climbing stooping or crouching to complete work-related tasks with and without students.
- The ability to listen and effectively orally communicate information and ideas to a diverse population.
- Ability to effectively discern information and formulate appropriate action(s).
- Ability to critically think and provide appropriate solutions.
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently.
Environmental Conditions:
Incumbents work in indoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels. Duties may be completed in cold and hot temperatures including work on slippery and/or uneven surfaces. Work environment includes working around students school equipment and office equipment.
Work Schedules:
Must be available to report during the school year consistent with the districts school year calendar.
