ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION

Founded in 1965 the Chinese-American Planning Council Inc. (CPC) aims to promote the social and economic empowerment of Chinese American immigrant and low-income communities. Today CPC is the nations largest Asian American social services agency and offers more than 50 programs at over 35 sites throughout New York City including early childhood education school-age care youth services workforce development community services and senior services. CPC strives to be the premier social service and leadership development organization. In 2017 CPC launched Advancing Our CommUNITY its organization-wide strategy to expand services to address persistent needs and emerging trends and to improve leadership skills among staff and community members. In 2021 CPC served over 125000 individuals and families from all 56 community districts of New York City by providing high-quality learning opportunities for all ages offering personalized social resources and developing their career paths. In the summer of 2022 CPC was recognized as the number one Chinese American organization in New York City to recommend to a Chinese immigrant looking for in-language and culturally competent resources according to a recent survey. The Caseworker is a vital team member within the Office for New Americans (ONA) Opportunity Center. The Caseworker is the first point of contact for community members and performs a range of tasks which can include naturalization application assistance and legal support coordination as well as performing client intake immigration relief assessment and referrals as needed. The role also includes a range of clerical-related duties.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Complete immigration applications on behalf of community members
  • Assist with organizing workshops and immigration clinics
  • Schedule client appointments for immigration consultation days
  • Manage organize and follow up with client case files
  • Assist with recruitment for immigration application assistance
  • Communicate with ONA Legal Counsel
  • Other related tasks assigned by ONA or CPC Brooklyn Community Services Director

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • Experience working in a nonprofit setting preferred.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong work ethic and demonstrated passion for working with immigrant and low-income communities.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent communication time management and multitasking skills.
  • Quick learner who thrives in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Candidates are expected to have flexibility for weekend and night hours as dictated by program needs.
  • Fluency in Mandarin and/or Cantonese required.

Additional Requirements

  • Must be able to be Department of Justice (DOJ) accredited (partial or full). ONA will assist in applying for accreditation. Once accredited staff member will be expected to maintain active status throughout the program.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS OVERVIEW

  • $22 to $25 per hour; 21 hours per week with occasional evenings and weekends as needed.
  • CPC offers eligible temporary staff members mandatory benefits including paid New York State sick time.
