Founded by a team with backgrounds at Uber and other high-growth startups were using technology to bring the furniture supply chain into the modern world. Our focus is simple: let furniture brands shine at what they do best designing and selling amazing products while we handle the heavy lifting of delivering them to customers homes safely quickly and professionally.
Blue Truck is growing fast. (Really fast.) Weve built a coast-to-coast network and earned a reputation for service that stands out in an industry that doesnt always get it right. For people who are ambitious solution-oriented and excited to be part of a company thats still early in its journey this is a ground-floor opportunity to shape and build the company.
What youll be doing
Youre responsible for overseeing four key functions that determine the entirety of our transit chain and when and how we execute deliveries:
- Route planning: Plan and route deliveries using our proprietary routing tool. You will hone your geographic knowledge to create week long routes that balance margin and time to deliver while adhering to origin and consignee constraints.
- Carrier management: Oversee recruitment management and oversight of our carrier supply base. Our deliveries are conducted by independent trucking companies mostly owner operators who are the face of Blue Truck. Your team is responsible for acquiring the right partners keeping them engaged and holding them accountable for performance.
- Daily schedule & route management: Oversee successful execution of the routes you planned by managing our companys schedule master who monitors daily execution (track and trace) publishes the next days schedule in drivers dispatch app and assists in handling delays and exceptions. Guide your team in handling recovery situations such as truck breakdowns crew delays etc.
- Line haul: Shipments from large partners and between terminals are handled via 53 semi truck. Your team coordinates and schedules these shipments while negating pricing and ensuring the best rates and service from suppliers.
You will manage team members who handle carrier management daily schedule & route management and line haul while taking on the task of route planning yourself. Over time this structure may evolve and you will have the flexibility to move responsibilities throughout your team as well as potentially hire up as business growth and budget allow.
What qualities and skills make you successful day to day
- You are a consummate multi-tasker capable of handling multiple work streams at once while ensuring nothing gets dropped. Truck breakdowns route schedule changes coverage issues - you may have several of these in flight at once and you know how to make sure that each situation is driven to completion with no dropped balls or customers left wondering whats happening with their delivery.
- You have a hard edge but also a strong sense of fairness when it comes to carrier management:
- Blue Truck carrier partners work hard every day and you need a strong sense of what is a fair market rate to compensate them. At the same time holding partners accountable including assessing contractual monetary penalties is equally important and a critical part of delivering a great customer experience.
- Under your stewardship our partners commit to Blue Truck because they know they will make good consistent money working with us but are held to an exacting standard and penalties for failing that standard are as consistent as gravity.
- You develop a fine sense of how to balance time to deliver and margin in your route planning. Youre playing a multi-period game where deciding which geographies to visit and optimizing for current week margin exists in tension with the need to do the same in future weeks. Planning is a weekly cycle but you have a mental executional plan that looks two to three weeks into the future.
- Problems and potential customer issues you uncover during routing arent ignored or punted but are quickly solved in the course of doing business. Problems that exist in your general vicinity have a way of just getting solved.
- Develop and grow your people. This is a complex business and there is a high premium for context; it is a business imperative that we have a strong internal pipeline of employees capable of taking on increasing levels of responsibility and complexity. As your team grows in size grow and develop an esprit de corp with pride in both Delivery Operations and Blue Truck.
- Learn (or already know) the freight business but be willing to re-think existing models and develop new ways of doing things. We are not attempting to mimic any existing player in the market but rather are developing a new approach to furniture distribution that leverages technology to rethink and improve the transit chain.
- You are willing to grind. Blue Truck is a startup. We are growing quickly but we are not looking for executives who simply observe execution. You are willing to roll up your sleeves and do the most valuable task that needs to be done at any given time - whether thats as high level as guiding your staff on the carrier supply strategy for the next quarter or as tactical as picking up the phone and calling an individual high-value customer to arrange a delivery date.
