Plant Seeds of Wonder In People and Gardens!

TheDepartment of Parks and Recreation (DPR) Urban Forestry Divisionis looking for a Recreation Specialist II (Botanical Gardens)to plan organize coordinate direct and evaluate the system-wide recreational and educational activities forHonolulu Botanical Gardens (HBG).

Duties include but are not limited to the following:
  • Plans organizes coordinates directs and evaluates a system-wide educational and recreational program with a strong emphasis on educational initiatives.
  • Supervises Recreation Specialist I positions by training and working collaboratively with staff. Conducts classes lectures and workshops at various sites in environmental disciplines natural sciences and ethnic studies utilizing the natural topography microclimate and plant collections featured at each site.
  • Prepares promotes and conducts activities designed to stimulate interest through active community relations including displays and exhibitions. Engages with community groups civic organizations other botanical gardens and arboreta and governmental agencies.
  • Performing other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application you must be a citizen national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from a regionally-accredited four-year college or university with a bachelors degree in recreation physical education group work or a related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Three (3) years of professional (post-bachelors degree non-clerical) recreation experience one (1) year of which shall have been in planning organizing coordinating and directing botanical horticultural or environmental interpretive educational and recreational programs or comparable programs including working with volunteers.

Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of policies principles plans tools and techniques of recreation; instructional methods plans procedures and techniques; group behavior; principles and practices of supervision; policies principles plans tools and techniques of the specialty area of recreation. Additionally such experience must have demonstrated the ability to plan organize promote administer and evaluate recreational activities and programs.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENT:
  1. Valid drivers license (Type 3/automobile) prior to appointment;
  2. Valid American Red Cross First Aid certificate or equivalent prior to completion of probation; and
  3. Valid American Red Cross or American Heart Association Adult Child and Infant CPR and AED certificate to include care for choking and obstructed airway or equivalent prior tocompletion of probation.
NOTE: The above licenses and certificates must be maintained on a current basis thereafter.
