Under the direction of an assigned administrator manage the varied operations and programs of the Facilities Maintenance section of the Maintenance Operations Transportation and Security Department; coordinate and supervise the communication installation repair and maintenance of facilities; coordinate and execute the implementation of student staff equipment and facility safety security and health related programs; plan organize monitor evaluate and supervise the work of assigned personnel assigned to several specialized facilities maintenance units.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Implement approved programs and services of District-wide maintenance and operations programs or services; plan organize and supervise the work of staff involved in the Facilities Maintenance sections including vehicle mechanics electrical electronics glazing office machines plumbing painting carpentry locksmithing heating and air conditioning and related trades.
Select train and evaluate assigned staff; schedule monitor and supervise the work of assigned staff; select assign and prioritize training of assigned staff; process formal and informal grievances; communicate with employees on matters related to performance and employee status; develop work procedures and practices of the unit; develop and modify work assignments of employees in accordance with the needs of the Facilities Maintenance section.
Interpret enforce and apply policies and regulatory requirements controlling the work of the Facilities Maintenance section; maintain records of payroll-related information of the unit; assure proper reporting of time worked and absences; conduct staff meetings.
Communicate and coordinate with school and District administrative personnel and staff to assure smooth and timely delivery of scheduled services; schedule service requests and identify appropriate solutions to problems.
Perform site inspections and visits; identify maintenance service needs and assign to appropriate division; oversee contractor work to assure compliance with approved plans; attend pre-bid conferences for deferred maintenance projects as assigned.
Maintain specialized records of capital improvements site inspections work orders material costs labor costs and employee work hours and generate a variety of repetitive and special reports and correspondence.
Assure compliance with required safety practices for staff; develop coordinate and provide safety and security procedures training and education programs; communicate with employees on safety infractions and report serious infractions; recommend safety training and equipment purchases as appropriate.
Coordinate emergency efforts and develop school safety procedures with assigned personnel local police and fire departments school officials and others to ensure safety during dangerous situations.
Coordinate crime prevention and protection activities such as a campus lock-down or truancy sweep with local law enforcement agencies.
Monitor police and fire frequencies on a radio scanner and advise administrative personnel concerning activity that may pose a hazard to campus security or adjacent areas.
Respond to and assist local police agency in investigating instances involving assault battery illegal substances use and other illegal acts occurring on District property.
Prepare and review criminal supplemental and incident reports relating to daily activities including observed violations interview and collection of physical evidence.
Provide site administrators with recommendations and assistance in maintaining school facilities and student security and safety; explain District policies and rules concerning security and safety.
Oversee the operation of the Districts intrusion alarm and security camera systems and identification badges.
Develop recommendations for new and modified programs policies regulations and procedures for approval.
Prepare estimates of costs; evaluate vendor bids for goods and services; prepare requisitions; administer assigned contracts and monitoring services provided to the District under contractual agreement.
Conduct periodic inspections of schools and facilities for needed repairs and safety; report findings.
Advise subordinate supervisors regarding supervisory practices and serve as reviewer of evaluations.
Prepare budget requests and administer approved budget; monitor and approve budget expenditures.
OTHER DUTIES:
Operate District vehicles; provide on-call weekend coverage as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school supplemented by completion of an approved apprenticeship program in one or more of the maintenance trades and five years maintenance experience including at least two years of responsible supervisory experience in the management of programs and services which include the maintenance repair construction and security of complex facilities and building equipment systems.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California drivers license.
Incumbent will be involved in field work which requires travel in personal or district vehicle to various sites.
Incumbents may be required to wear protective apparel including goggles face protectors aprons and shoes.

Positions in the job classification are exempt and work 12 months per year.

Hayward Unified School District will provide a contribution of up to $2500 per year to be used towards a District healthcare plan or cash in lieu of up to $1350 per year. Full-time employees are required to purchase medical health benefits unless proof of alternate coverage is provided. Half-time and less than half-time employees may participate on a voluntary basis. The balance of health benefit costs are paid through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
Dental coverage is provided free of charge for all employees working 20 hours per week or more. Family coverage is available and any additional premium will be employee paid.
Classified employees must participate in the CalPERS Retirement program.
