At the Virginia Department of Transportation we have something for you.

Our Structure & Bridge Division is seeking a qualified Engineer (Wage) to join the Engineering Services Program area. This role will involve developing and revising structural engineering office practices details standards and specifications for inclusion VDOTs Structure and Bridge Division Manual and other VDOT documents.

The selected candidate will be responsible for:
Designs: Prepare effective preliminary and final bridge and structure designs for new construction maintenance and rehabilitation projects ensuring compliance with American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and VDOT specifications. Prepare bridge plans sketches and structural drawings. Check structural plans prepared by others to ensure accuracy and completeness. Ensure shop plans meet AASHTO and VDOT specifications are geometrically correct and meet requirements of project design condition of existing structures and assist in developing scope of proposed bridge structures for safe load carrying capacity and perform structural calculationsto ensure soundness and compliance of structural elements.

Policies and Procedures: Use established VDOT policies and procedures in the development and delivery of engineering projects. Engineering projects are completed in compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.

Communications: Establish an effective line of communication between VDOT contractors government agencies and the public. Investigate issues and resolve complaints.

Technical Support: Provide technical guidance and support related to bridge construction activities issues and problems. Develop effective and economical recommendations to respond to construction problems and other bridge-related inquiries. Document all occurrences for future reference. Participate in meetings to ensure bridge-related issues are present.

Perform duties as assigned: Perform duties tasks activities and/or projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities with competing deadlines and limited resources.

Ability to provide detailed reports on review findings.

Knowledge of specifications codes and regulations related to structural design (e.g. American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials).

Ability to enforce and demonstrate safety behaviors as well as advocate and practice safety in everyday work activities.

Knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices related to structural engineering to include strength of materials statics and structural analysis.

Knowledge of VDOT state and federal policies and procedures relatingto transportation engineering.

Additional Considerations

A combination of training experience or education in Civil Engineering Structural Engineering or related field desired.

Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineers (PE) license desired.

Skilled in AASHTOs Load Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) specifications desired.

VDOT is an emergency operation agency. Positions physically working within Central Office locations may be designated upon request and coordination among the respective District Engineer or Administrator and Chief. Assignments are updated annually. Not all designated employees are provided an emergency operations assignment.

Once onboarded this position may be eligible for telework opportunities; availability hours and duration of telework shall be approved as outlined in the Commonwealth telework policy.

VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.

The position you are applying for is an Hourly/Wage position. Hourly (wage) employees may not work more than an average of 29 hours a week and cannot exceed 1500 hours the wage employment year (5/1 - 4/30).
