Job Description

TITLE: School-Based Mentor

EMPLOYMENT TERM: Extra Duty Assignment for the School Year

REPORTS TO: Principal and/or Assistant Principal

STIPEND: $800

RESPONSIBILITIES: To provide ongoing support to teachers new to teaching (TNT); i.e. 1st year and certified and non-certified teachers new to Berkeley County schools (TNBC); i.e. 2-3 years at all grade levels.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • WV Professional Teaching Certificate
  • Minimum of three years of experience
  • Successful evaluations for last three years of employment
  • Currently working for Berkeley County Schools
  • Demonstrate the following competencies:
  • A high degree of pedagogy
  • A strong understanding of core content standards
  • A strong understanding of formative and summative assessment
  • The ability to use effective instructional strategies to augment the delivery of instruction
  • The ability to integrate technology into the delivery of instruction
  • The ability to motivate people
  • The ability to be a team player
  • An interest in assisting teachers new to the profession and new to the school

FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:

  • Be the school-based mentor for up to two (2) mentees within the home school.
  • Complete the WVDE Foundations of Mentoring training by May of school year if not already done so.
  • Meet with mentee(s) a minimum of:
  • First semester of mentoring:
  • One mentee assigned meet weekly
  • Two mentees assigned meet with each one every other week.
  • Second semester of mentoring with administrative approval:
  • One mentee assigned meet bi-weekly
  • Two mentees assigned meet with each once a month
  • Collaborate with administration and county-based mentor/coach for additional and in-depth support for the mentee(s).
  • Model all aspects of professionalism including the importance of employee confidentiality at all times for the purpose of demonstrating expected behaviors and actions of BCS teachers.
  • Build a relationship with mentee(s) for the purpose of establishing an environment of trust and collaboration and providing emotional support.
  • Assist mentee(s) in a supportive role rather than an evaluative role.
  • Must be available for commitments beyond the instructional day when necessary.
  • Maintain a Meeting Log (provided) and submit at end of each semester to county-based mentor/coach and school administration.
  • Attend monthly support meetings with county-based mentors/coaches and other school-based mentors in programmatic levels (elementary secondary special education)
  • Participate in assigned professional development sessions to keep abreast of county initiatives.
  • Complete and submit documentation to county-based mentor/coach as scheduled.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read analyze and interpret general periodicals professional journals technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators staff parents students and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions percentages ratios and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written oral diagram or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs; ability to plan and implement lessons based on school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students peers and parents; skill in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to stand talk hear walk and sit. While performing the duties of this job the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 50 lbs such as boxes of books and AV carts. The employee is directly

responsible for the safety well-being or work output of other people. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as reading handwritten or typed material and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
