Job Description

DEPARTMENT: Nursing

REPORTS TO: Sr. Nurse Administrator

SALARY: $2500.00 stipend position

SCHEDULE:To be arranged with the Nursing Administrator in accordance with contract requirements. This is a stipend position for work done during and outside of the scheduled workday.

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The School Nurse Specialist is a qualified professional who serves as both a leader and expert in the field of school nursing. This role encompasses providing effective training and guidance fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment and upholding high standards of care across the nursing department. The specialist is responsible for overseeing health office operations offering transformational leadership and promoting a positive professional atmosphere. By setting a strong example the School Nurse Specialist inspires and engages others in the pursuit of departmental goals. Exceptional communication skills and a comprehensive understanding of the school nurses role are essential for success in this position.

DUTIES:

  1. Orients and mentors nursing personnel to implement school health programming.
  2. Carries out communicable disease prevention and infection control based on current guidelines for standard precautions.
  3. Promotes positive linkage and referral mechanisms to community providers for a range of services dealing with child and adolescent health
  4. Assist with ongoing continuing education programs for staff to facilitate meeting the requirements for licensure and to maintain and to expand clinical skills
  5. Serve as a positive professional role model for colleagues
  6. Member of the Springfield wellness committee attending meetings and providing status reports as indicated.
  7. Attend mandatory monthly meetings as arranged by nurse administration before or after scheduled workday.
  8. Provides support through telephone and/or in-person assistance for nursing education on standards of practice.
  9. Facilitate implementation of new information regarding policies and procedures.
  10. Provide input to update or draft procedural recommendations or protocols annually.
  11. Identify issues gaps in practice and barriers to care. Track issues and record interventions and outcomes.
  12. Compile a monthly report to submit to nurse administration for data sharing.
  13. Utilize data to inform procedural recommendations and support evidence-based improvements.
  14. Assist with the educator evaluation process for nursing staff as assigned.
  15. Function as an American Heart Association (AHA) training center faculty member. Coordinate CPR training requirements in accordance with AHA standards.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have a current valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts.
  • Have three years of responsible professional experience in school nursing
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification
  • Current CPR Instructor
  • Professional Licensure required as a School Nurse

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  • Requires ability to travel amongst Springfield public schools locations.
