Job Duties

About the Position:

The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire a MVIP Investigator in our Safety Division Area 63 Office in Amherst Virginia. The successful candidate will conduct background investigations on inspection station applicants and safety inspector candidates for the Motor Vehicle Inspection Program (MVIP). Obtain personal and employment data to make certification determinations.
Document findings obtained in the interview and background investigation process by completing the appropriate background investigation report attaching the supporting documentation and submitting to supervision for review. Conduct inspector applicant and recertification testing in their assigned areas with the assistance of other
investigators and MVIP troopers. Enter data into MVIP database as required. Conduct inspection sticker
replacements. Assist troopers in conducting vehicle audit investigations.

Minimum Qualifications

Working knowledge of principles and practices of investigation and research; of interviewing techniques; of methods and techniques of negotiation; and of relevant federal and state laws and regulations related to the legal requirements of background investigations. Skill in the operation of computers and using Microsoft Office applications.
Demonstrated ability to evaluate the suitability of an applicant and prepare sound recommendations based on research and analysis; to work within stringent deadlines; to organize prioritize and perform multiple tasks; to work
independently and as a member of a team; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with applicants employees and the public; and to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing.
Valid motor vehicle operators license required.
High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Additional Considerations

Retired law enforcement preferred.
General knowledge of the Motor Vehicle Inspection Program is preferred.
Formal military or civilian trade school preferred.
