Job Description

Alexander County Schools Department of Exceptional Children

Program Specialist

Full-time 10 month position with benefits starting with the 2025 - 2026 school yar

Position Overview

The Program Specialist will oversee EC programming of the assigned schools/programs in the district. The candidate will directly support building administrators special education teachers and support staff. The candidate must understand the characteristics and needs of students with disabilities and research-based interventions for students with various disabilities. They must also have knowledge of programming options the laws and procedures governing exceptional childrens programming and curriculum expectations for students in the general and adaptive curriculum. The position requires effective communication skills both oral and written outstanding interpersonal and organizational skills.

Qualifications

  • Masters degree preferred and valid North Carolina Special Education License or valid School Psychologist License or valid Speech & Language Pathology License; advanced training and related experience in the education of individuals with exceptional needs; specialized in-depth knowledge of autism emotional disabilities and mental health services or moderate-severe disabilities.

Essential Duties

  • Monitor EC programs in assigned schools to ensure compliance and effectiveness of programming.
  • Provide consultation and guidance to assigned schools in matters related to EC programming.
  • Respond to parent concerns and complaints related to EC programming.
  • Participate in regularly scheduled EC Leadership Team meetings EC Team meetings and other EC staff meetings as scheduled.
  • Assist in providing staff development to general education special education teachers and administrators.
  • Assist newly employed contracted or current EC teachers.
  • Strong knowledge of policies governing students with disabilities.
  • Strong knowledge of the ECATS data management system.
  • Represent the EC Department in IEP team meetings as needed.
  • Work collaboratively and collegially with other EC Program staff.
  • Assist in collecting and analyzing program data for planning and evaluation.
  • Guide Special Education staff in compliance with IEP and ECATS.
  • Holds a valid drivers license and is willing to travel to school sites within Alexander County Schools.
  • Perform related duties as required.
