The Custodian is a member of a team responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and functionality of The Mustard Seeds buildings and facilities. The Custodian participates on a team that is committed to developing hope providing care with respect and nurturing the seeds of change in the lives of our guests and residents.

Schedule: Thursday to Monday 9:00 am-5:00 pm

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Cleaning and maintenance of the various Mustard Seed facilities and shelter locations
- Daily cleaning such as:
- cleaning floors walls windows and other surfaces
- sweeping mopping and dusting
- cleaning and disinfecting washrooms (floor toilets sinks and urinals)
- restocking supplies such as paper towels toilet paper and soap
- collecting and disposing of refuse found in and around premises
- Minor repairs.
- Moving and setup of furniture.
- Responding to and addressing cleaning emergencies such as spills or accidents.
- Maintaining and operating cleaning equipment such as vacuums floor buffers and pressure washers.
- Removal of snow and ice from walkways and other areas to ensure safe pedestrian and vehicle access during the winter months.
- Communicating with management or other staff about facility needs and maintenance issues.
- Working with volunteers guests and residents. Address inquiries and resolve complaints effectively.
- Ensuring tidiness and professionalism in all aspects of daily work.
- Being present and punctual on a routine basis.
- Complete required training and attend meetings.
- Must adhere to Health and Safety regulations.
- Other duties and work at various sites may be required.
- Maintain professionalism and adhere to all policies and procedures including but not limited to Health & Safety and HR policies and procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- Knowledge of WHMIS and OH&S standards is an asset.
- Attention to detail ability to follow instructions and taking care to perform tasks with excellence.
- Good communication skills showing kindness patience and empathy towards colleagues volunteers clients and building occupants.
- Reliable and dependable work ethic treating others and their property with care and consideration.
- Organized self-directed proactive and accountable with the ability to work well with team members.
- Willingness to perform tasks that may seem menial or unimportant.
- Cultural sensitivity and respect for client individuality and self determination.
- A broad knowledge of and experience working with Indigenous communities is an asset.
- Desire to work in a Christian environment viewing your work as a means of serving God and others.
- Proficient in English both written and verbal.
- Ability to lift and move at least 50 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- This position will require working inside and outside in various climates.
- The position is fast-paced and will require frequent manual labor and working alone onsite at times.
- Considerable periods of standing walking lifting climbing stairs indoors and outdoors.
- Adhering to safety protocols and using personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
- Physically active for 4 hours a day including lifting at least 50lbs repeatedly.
- May be exposed to infectious waste diseases and conditions.
- Operating cleaning equipment such as floor buffers carpet cleaners and pressure washers.
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals.
- Employees are to be aware that many of our clients may experience difficulties or impairment at times which could result in them uttering threats discriminatory statements and other insults at your person. This may be in a raised voice or in seeing unpredictable behaviour up to and including the possibility of them becoming aggressive.
- Training on how to respond is provided but this is to be considered typical working conditions. Many of our clients are unaware of the impact of these comments.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- As The Mustard Seed is a Christian ministry we require our employees sign an agreement indicating that they will respect and not detract from our Statement of Faith.
- Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
