Job Description

Position: Director of Alternative Education Programs
Immediate Supervisor: Executive Director of Pupil Services
FLSA Status: Exempt
Term: 261 days annually pursuant to WV Code
Salary: In accordance with Berkeley County Schools Teacher with experience and education level along with Directors Index

Evaluation: Performance in this position will be evaluated by the Superintendent and in accordance with WV State Code 18A-2-12 WV State Board Policy 5310

Job Overview:

The Director of Alternative Education Programs provides strategic leadership and operational oversight of alternative education services across the district. This role ensures the development implementation and continuous improvement of educational programs designed for students who require non-traditional pathways to academic success. The Director collaborates with schools administrators community partners and families to support student achievement promote equity and reduce dropout rates.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Administration
  • Develop and oversee the districts vision for alternative education aligned with educational accountability and student success.
  • Supervise and evaluate alternative education staff and program leaders.
  • Coordinate professional development opportunities related to alternative education strategies.
  • Program Development & Evaluation
  • Design and implement innovative programs to meet the diverse needs of at-risk and non-traditional learners.
  • Use data to monitor program effectiveness student outcomes and necessary adjustments.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations related to alternative education.
  • Student Support & Services
  • Promote wraparound services including behavioral support mental health career pathways and credit recovery options.
  • Advocate for personalized learning approaches and trauma-informed practices.
  • Develop re-entry strategies for students transitioning from juvenile justice or other institutions.
  • Collaboration & Communication
  • Serve as liaison between the district and external agencies including community-based organizations and government partners.
  • Communicate regularly with stakeholders regarding goals progress and needs of alternative education programs.
  • Support district-wide efforts to address student discipline dropout prevention and student re-engagement.
  • Budget & Compliance
  • Develop and manage program budgets grants and funding streams.
  • Ensure adherence to district policies safety protocols and legal requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in Education Educational Leadership or related field (Doctorate preferred)
  • Valid Administrative Credential (or eligibility)
  • Experience in supervision and evaluation of employees
  • Minimum 5 years of educational leadership experience with demonstrated work in alternative or at-risk youth programs
  • Deep understanding of State Laws and Policies regarding Alternative Education
  • Strong organizational interpersonal and communication skills
