Job Description

Research Technician Land Surveying (New Mexico)

Founded in 1973 DJ&A is a multidisciplinary professional services consulting firm with office locations in Montana Colorado Washington South Dakota New Mexico and Nevada. Our team of more than 180 professionals works across the country to deliver a diverse range of engineering environmental survey mapping landscape architecture and planning projects for federal state local tribal and private clientele.

We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Research Technician to join our team supporting land surveying operations in New Mexico. This position involves researching public and private records to determine property ownership easements rights-of-way and other existing land rights. The role is open to both experienced professionals and entry-level candidates with a strong willingness to learn.

Key Responsibilities:

Land and Title Research:

  • Search county clerk assessor and recorder offices across New Mexico for deeds plats easements and other legal instruments.
  • Analyze chain of title and historical records to verify land ownership and resolve inconsistencies.
  • Utilize New Mexico-specific land record systems such as NM Counties online portals Bureau of Land Management (BLM) General Land Office Records and State Land Office archives.

Easement and Right-of-Way Analysis:

  • Identify and document public and private easements rights-of-way and encumbrances impacting the property.
  • Research utility company records and agreements related to access and infrastructure.
  • Support legal and survey teams in interpreting complex easement documents.

Data Management and Reporting:

  • Organize research findings into concise reports and digital databases.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of sources dates accessed and any correspondence with agencies.
  • Assist in preparing background reports for survey crews and project managers.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Coordinate with surveyors GIS analysts project leads and legal consultants.
  • Communicate with county officials and title companies to retrieve or clarify records when necessary.
  • Contribute to a collaborative environment that values accuracy transparency and continuous learning.

Preferred Qualifications:


Experience & Skills

  • Preferred: 1 years of experience in land records research title work or surveying support.
  • Entry-Level: Candidates with strong attention to detail curiosity and eagerness to learn are encouraged to apply.
  • Familiarity with land use concepts metes and bounds township/range systems and legal descriptions used in New Mexico.
  • Basic proficiency in using GIS platforms record search databases and tools such as Microsoft Excel and Word.


Education

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Associate degree or coursework in surveying geography GIS real estate or legal studies is a plus.

SalaryandBenefits

  • Wage: $26-$32 per hour commensurate with experience.
