MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT GRANT-FUNDED (SUMMER TERM)

TITLE:Maintenance Assistant

DURATION:Summer Term (May - August 2025)

LOCATION:661 Main Street 75 Martha 637 Main Street Common outdoor spaces

DEPARTMENT:Facilities

REPORTS TO:Director of Operations

WAGE: $18 per hour

HOURS OF WORK: 40 hours a week


ABOUT THE COMPANY
Main Street Project Inc. (MSP) is a not-for-profit charitable community health center with a mandate to address the social determinants of health which give rise to issues of addiction physical and mental health issues and homelessness. MSP uses housing-first and harm reduction principles in the provision of a safe respectful and accessible place for individuals who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness in the community.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Cleaner/Maintenance worker ensures that Main Street Project (MSP) buildings both interior and exterior are always kept clean and in good repair which includes cleaning floors washing walls and glass removing/emptying refuse containers removing garbage from MSP owned property (parking lots lanes and alleyways) snow removal ice sanding completing ongoing maintenance requirements and notifying Director of Operations of required repairs.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Service clean and stock MSP facilities
  • Gather and empty trash
  • Clean sweep and mop floors multiple times during shift
  • Sweep mop and vacuum duties
  • Ensure inventory of cleaning supplies is maintained in all areas moving supplies between different sites and restocking as needed
  • Strip seal finish and polish floors
  • Notify supervisor concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems
  • Clean windows glass partitions or mirrors
  • Snow removal and ice sanding
  • Moving of furniture donations and deliveries
  • Minor maintenance including but not limited to:

o Minor plumbing issues (e.g. unclogging drains etc.)

o Simple Carpentry (e.g. dry wall patching door replacement etc.)

o Painting

o Removal/installation/assembly of furniture and fixtures

  • Other duties as assigned


QUALIFICATONS
  • Prior handyman/repair or cleaning experience in a similar community health environment
  • Reliable punctual and dependable in fulfilling position obligations
  • Attention to detail and ability to complete tasks
  • Demonstrates adaptability and flexibility to changing needs and tasks
  • Ability to take initiative beyond the scope of assigned daily and weekly tasks to meet the needs of the department
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Customer Service skills ability to interact professionally with staff visitors clients and management
  • Working knowledge of basic computer skills (i.e. Outlook).


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body such as climbing lifting balancing walking stooping and handling of materials
  • Ability to handle and move objects - Using hands and arms in handling installing positioning and moving materials
  • Ability to lift 50lbs or more
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Clear Vulnerable Sector Search and Clear Adult Abuse Registry Check required. The employee is responsible for any service charges incurred.
  • Valid Drivers License is an asset

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
  • Based on the funding requirements for this position applicants must be between 18 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period.
  • Be a Canadian citizen permanent resident or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Act for the duration of the employment. (Social Insurance Numbers that start with 900 will not qualify under this funding)
  • Have a valid social insurance number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
