Planetarium Caretaker Plan
Overview
To ensure the continued successful operation of the planetarium housed at Shawswick Elementary this proposal outlines a clear plan for caretaker responsibilities and logistical management. The planetarium is a valuable educational resource that supports science instruction enriches student learning and inspires curiosity about space and astronomy. This plan provides structured guidance to maintain its functionality availability and impact across the district.
Planetarium Caretaker Responsibilities
- Managing the Schedule
- The designated planetarium caretaker will organize and coordinate the planetariums usage. This includes maintaining a master calendar to ensure equitable efficient and timely access for all schools programs and events that wish to use the facility. The caretaker will also handle scheduling and collaborate with NLCS maintenance staff to arrange transportation of the planetarium to other elementary schools as needed.
- Training
- The planetarium caretaker will provide annual training sessions to teachers and staff who are responsible for implementing the scope and sequence plan to students in their schools to ensure that they are confident in operating the planetariums equipment and software. These sessions will cover setup program navigation troubleshooting and safety protocols.
- Inventory Management
- The planetarium caretaker will oversee and maintain an uptodate inventory of all planetariumrelated materials equipment and supplies. This includes ensuring all items are functional accounted for and appropriately stored after use.
- Scheduling Maintenance Requests
- The planetarium caretaker will coordinate routine and emergency maintenance needs for the planetarium equipment.
- Overseeing Repairs
- The planetarium caretaker will be responsible for following up on any repairs needed ensuring issues are addressed promptly and verifying that all repairs restore full functionality to the equipment.
Storage and Location
The planetarium including the inflatable dome (cylinders) and support cart will continue to be stored at Shawswick Elementary in the old shop room. This location offers adequate space security and accessibility for districtwide use.
Planetarium Caretaker Pay
- ECA contract under Schedule XI (Elementary) $736/$715

With a dedicated caretaker managing logistics and upkeep the planetarium can continue to provide enriching STEM experiences for elementary students across the district.
