Job Description

Position: Coordinator of Family and Community Engagement

Location: Central Office

Reports to: Director of Federal Programs

Length of Employment: 240 (FLEX) days

Salary: As per Berkeley County pay schedule with years of experienceand degree levelCoordinator index

Purpose: Under the direction of the Director of Federal Programs the Family and Community Engagement Coordinator will develop and implement district and schoolbased programs which leverage the resources of the broader Berkeley County community in order to serve the social emotional physical and educational needs of its children and families.

Family Engagement is defined as the participation of parents guardians and/or adult family members directly involved with the wellbeing of the child in regular twoway and meaningful communication involving student academic learning and other school activities. Community Engagement refers to all others who are involved in supporting the child including but not limited to neighbors school staff and local businesses. Berkeley County Schools strives to develop a full partnership with parents/guardians family members and community members while providing a quality education for all students.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelors Degree required.
  2. Must possess excellent communication and organizational skills.
  3. Display strong public speaking and presentation skills; experience in promotions via social media challenges desired.
  4. Selfmotivated leader who can work independently as well as part of a team.
  5. Strong interpersonal skills.
  6. Knowledge of the research and literature encompassing child development and family engagement.
  7. Knowledge and experience in building strong community partnerships and youth and family development.
  8. Strong knowledge of computers and fundamental technology.
  9. Understands and respects the uniqueness of families economic linguistic and cultural backgrounds and situations.
  10. Ability to host parent meetings off school sites and in the local community and/or neighborhoods.
  11. Strong understanding of student achievement data.
  12. Ability to speak eloquently to school and/or district leaders.
  13. Ability to work flexible hours including some nights and weekends.
  14. To hold all confidential information in trust and strict confidence and agree that it shall be used only for the purposes required to fulfill employment obligations and shall not be used for any other purpose or disclosed to any third party.
  15. Maintain professional working relationships with all district employees and Board members.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

Serves as a liaison between the school district (district schools) and parents/guardians families and community members relaying the needs of one to the other; educates teachers and service staff on how to communicate and work effectively with parents all stakeholders as equal partners; advises and trains parents/guardians/family members on how to address issues with the leadership staff in school meetings; expands opportunities for continued learning voluntary community service and civic participation; develops community collaborations; helps parents/guardians/family members understand the educational system so they can become better advocates for their childrens education; develops and maintains a parent/guardian/family member resource center.

Responsibilities:

  1. Develop a curriculum that includes courses and workshops in support of the countys family and community engagement initiative.
  2. Provides workshops classes and activities for parents at their local school(s) and/or district on a regular basis
  3. Assist with the planning and implementation of districtwide events that involve parent family community and/or business partners attendance.
  4. Assist with the management of the Board of Educations digital imprint on webpage content social media (Facebook Twitter Blog) that relates to parent family and community engagement initiatives.
  5. Develop and maintain a Family and Community Engagement webpage on the district website with the purpose of assisting parents and families with support resources.
  6. Develop and produce a video and workshop series designed to assist parents and families with resources to support the learning and developmental needs of children and students.
  7. Recruit volunteers from the community to host various workshops and classes to speak directly with parents
  8. Works with school administrators parent partners and parent organizations in support of the family and community engagement initiative.
  9. Works with the other departments to address student attendance and graduation issues.
  10. Provides materials such as event calendars brochures videos and educational resources through multiple sources such as website social media and print material.
  11. Creates opportunities for parents who have limited English proficiency a disability or are underrepresented because of social economics or racial barriers to participate in education initiatives and enrichment workshops
  12. Provides technical assistance relating to family engagement as needed to schools also ensuring that all Title I family engagement compliance requirements are met at all Title I schools.
  13. Acts as a liaison with all stakeholders in areas of family and community engagement.
  14. Develop and maintain an evaluation process that supports the growth of the county initiative.
  15. Coordinate with Director and Asst Director of Federal Programs to create and update the Districts Title I Family Engagement Policy
  16. Support all Title I schools in creating and updating annually their school Family Engagement Policy and their Title I Compact
  17. Perform other duties as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 50lbs such as boxes of books and device carts. The employee is directly responsible for safety wellbeing or work output of other people. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.

The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud. Duties are performed indoors and occasionally outdoors. This position requires travel from school to school.
