Job Description

The New York Times is looking for an experienced news photo editor to join our Digital News Desk team in our London newsroom. You will help shape and present visual coverage coming out of our breaking news operation and will curate the mobile and desktop home screen presentations as well as our global briefing products. Our photo editors ensure our visual journalism has power and impact wherever our readers encounter it and that every story is a mobilefirst multimedia experience.

You will work closely with the editors on the Express and News desks and colleagues from photo design graphics and video. You will work productively proactively and collegially with staff photographers freelance photographers and fellow photo editors and must be experienced and confident in working with wire services agencies and all other sources of pictures and video including social media and photographer estates.

In addition to driving the visual curation and presentation of The Times report of original assigned photography and video on multiple platforms you will assign breaking news visual coverage as needed. You will also share responsibility for daily European culture coverage collaborating with reporters and editors based in London and throughout Europe. In all of these duties in keeping with the global and 24hour nature of our report you will exercise creative and editorial autonomy to make critical and deadline oriented decisions during hours when our London newsroom leads coverage during hours when our London newsroom leads coverage.

You have a strong demonstrable passion for photojournalism and visual storytelling of all kinds and possess a broad knowledge of the current photographic landscape including digitally innovative formats and mobilefirst multimedia presentations. You have excellent editorial judgment and journalistic integrity and knowledge of photographic usage and copyright issues. You can edit sharply for multiple platforms produce complex photo assignments perform thorough agency and social media research and work quickly and effectively in a large newsroom setting. Early mornings nights or weekends may be required.

This is a Tuesday Saturday role and a hybrid position based in London and includes regular attendance in the office each week.
