Job Description
The New York Times is looking for an experienced news photo editor to join our Digital News Desk team in our London newsroom. You will help shape and present visual coverage coming out of our breaking news operation and will curate the mobile and desktop home screen presentations as well as our global briefing products. Our photo editors ensure our visual journalism has power and impact wherever our readers encounter it and that every story is a mobilefirst multimedia experience.
You will work closely with the editors on the Express and News desks and colleagues from photo design graphics and video. You will work productively proactively and collegially with staff photographers freelance photographers and fellow photo editors and must be experienced and confident in working with wire services agencies and all other sources of pictures and video including social media and photographer estates.
In addition to driving the visual curation and presentation of The Times report of original assigned photography and video on multiple platforms you will assign breaking news visual coverage as needed. You will also share responsibility for daily European culture coverage collaborating with reporters and editors based in London and throughout Europe. In all of these duties in keeping with the global and 24hour nature of our report you will exercise creative and editorial autonomy to make critical and deadline oriented decisions during hours when our London newsroom leads coverage during hours when our London newsroom leads coverage.
You have a strong demonstrable passion for photojournalism and visual storytelling of all kinds and possess a broad knowledge of the current photographic landscape including digitally innovative formats and mobilefirst multimedia presentations. You have excellent editorial judgment and journalistic integrity and knowledge of photographic usage and copyright issues. You can edit sharply for multiple platforms produce complex photo assignments perform thorough agency and social media research and work quickly and effectively in a large newsroom setting. Early mornings nights or weekends may be required.
This is a Tuesday Saturday role and a hybrid position based in London and includes regular attendance in the office each week.
Responsibilities:
- Exercise creative and editorial autonomy to independently assign manage and curate compelling photo coverage during nonUS hours ensuring the selection of impactful images meticulous editing for quality and relevance and the crafting of engaging and elevated visual presentations.
- Produce and build promotional visual assets for news stories and enterprise content with attention to detail in a fastpaced newsroom.
- Independently manage photography assignments and coverage directing freelancers and photographers often in logistically complex breaking news and potentially highrisk or hostile environments on a regular basis in order to deliver the departments signature photojournalism and leading enterprise stories.
- Learn embrace and publish innovative and experimental visual storytelling formats.
- Own critical editorial decision making in a fastpaced environment ensuring timely and accurate visual journalism.
- Demonstrate strong editorial judgment working with Times editors and legal department for all vetting copyright and ethics questions.
- Maintain a very high level of photography and video assigning for news and feature stories for all platforms including mobile and print.
- Demonstrate the ability to pitch develop edit pace and build a powerful visual story incorporating multimedia and the use of innovative storytelling tools.
- Work with reporters and editors to shape ideas into visual story opportunities.
- Focus on working with a diverse range of subjects and photographers keeping our global and multigenerational audience in mind.
- Identify vet and onboard new contributing photojournalists as needed. Ensure that new contributors are versed and committed to ethical journalistic rigor independence and integrity. Work to strengthen relationships with the photographers you are directing through briefings regular contact and feedback.
- Work closely with supervisor and broader department fostering productive collegial and collaborative relationships with journalists throughout the newsroom.
- Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications:
- Significant experience in a newsroom photo editing role.
- Some experience assigning and directing photojournalists in a variety of situations.
- An enthusiasm for visual journalism and current events coupled with keen news judgment and a firm sense of journalistic ethics.
- Exceptional technical skills including in depth knowledge of web tools and programs content management systems Photoshop PhotoMechanic video editing tools FTP and social media platforms.
- Knowledge of responsive design and best practices for building stories and editing images for maximum impact on mobile devices.
- Can work occasional early mornings nights or weekends.
