CBC News is looking for experienced digital writers and copy editors to join our team at Canadas leading digital news operation and ensure the accurate and timely delivery of news to CBCs digital mobile social and video news platforms. A key requirement is quickly and accurately writing and editing breaking news particularly for our live pages.
These are full-time positions for a one-year term which may include early morning evening and weekend shifts.
Youre a critical thinker with excellent news judgment who is comfortable making independent editorial decisions aligned with the CBCs Journalistic Standards and Practices (JSP) and the CBC News strategy. You are a self-starter who can work collaboratively and collegially without much supervision.
With experience in a breaking news environment you thrive under pressure and are comfortable jumping from topic to topic and learning fast. The thrill of seeing audience engagement outweighs the fear of not knowing where a story might go.
You care about the people you work with and have a deep appreciation for different perspectives opinions and experiences. You live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture. You revel in your teams success together.
Overtime work may be assigned based on operational requirements.
Tasks and responsibilities:
Writer
Write short engaging entries for live story pages. Identify and summarize key events distilling information down to the essentials.
File daily digital text stories including researching reporting interviewing writing and fact-checking.
Ensure content is accurate and up to date
Package digital stories according to mobile-first considerations with an emphasis on increasing audience engagement including relevant videos audio and photo galleries.
Pitch stories that align with audience needs and address gaps in coverage.
Work with senior producers to develop story focus and structure.
Work collaboratively with editors to sharpen headlines and text.
Identify and pursue a diverse range of sources.
Copy editor
Copy edit and proof digital stories social posts and video titles and descriptions for accuracy relevance context fairness balance impartiality and style according to the JSP CBC News Language Guide and best practices.
Ensure content is accurate and up to date
For live story pages keep the bigger story in mind while editing the details. Help the producer guide the writers on where the breaking news is going how to differentiate posts etc.
Pitch stories that align with audience needs.
Work with senior producers and writers to develop story focus and structure.
Work collaboratively with editors to sharpen headlines and text.
Identify and pursue a diverse range of sources.
Relevant qualifications
Minimum five years recent experience in a digital news environment.
Excellent news judgment.
Substantial experience writing copy editing researching fact-checking and packaging digital news content.
Experience filing to and running live breaking news pages is an asset.
Knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
Cultural awareness and sensitivity.
Open mindset.
Proven ability to work effectively under 24/7 deadline pressures and file same-day stories and breaking news posts.
Stellar communication and interpersonal skills.
Aptitude with text and video content management systems.
Knowledge of digital audience habits breaking news industry trends.
Knowledge of style CP style is an asset.
Experience in Search Engine Optimization and Social Media Optimization.
University degree or equivalent.
