Job Description

Pacific NW Magazine a weekly showcase of The Seattle Times storytelling and visual journalism is looking for its new editor. In this role you will lead a small team of staffers in the production of a print and digital product that depicts the vibrant culture and people of the Northwest and helps readers connect to the special place we call home. Were looking for an ambitious visionary editor who excels at both the big-picture planning and the story editing that go hand-in-hand in this role. Help us chart and drive our overall editorial strategy by identifying relevant subjects stories and trends to cover work with writers to make their copy glow and collaborate with designers and photographers to produce story packages that sing both on the page and on a screen. Bonus points if youre knowledgeable about Seattles culture and history.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with senior editors and others in the company to chart overall editorial strategy for the magazine.
  • Lead and manage a group of staffers and a roster of freelancers.
  • Work with reporters and freelance reporters to conceive and execute stories that surprise and delight readers in print and online and maintain a stocked editorial calendar.
  • Juggle a high volume of work under steady deadline pressure.
  • Work closely with the magazines copy editor and designer and other members of the magazine team throughout the production process to ensure deadlines and publication standards are met.
  • Have a clear vision of what makes a Pacific NW magazine story a strong sense of place identifiable voice and knockout visuals. Work closely with our Graphics and Photo departments throughout the production process communicating clearly and frequently.
  • Work collaboratively with writers and editors from the rest of the newsroom showcasing their talents and respecting their priorities. Manage monthly budgets.
  • Uphold standards of ethics accuracy fairness and responsibility in all stories that go into the magazine.
  • Have an inclusive mindset. This means considering in our stories the full range of human diversity with respect to ability language culture gender age and identity and the ways that people of various identities interact with our magazine.
  • Be an active participant in and a leader of our newsroom.
  • Stay up to date on digital best practices and on how to use digital social media tools and audience engagement techniques to look for stories reach audiences and promote and optimize our content.
  • Use digital analytics to help devise content strategy reach audiences win subscribers and build reader loyalty.
  • Work collaboratively with production and press staffers as needed to ensure the print magazine gets published every week.
  • Communicate with readers when appropriate and represent the magazine in the community.
  • Occasionally pitch in to help the newsroom juggle news coverage in all-hands-on-deck situations.

  • Experience: 5 years of management experience preferably in a news operation or equivalent.
  • Education: Bachelors degree or relevant equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team.
  • Big-picture thinking and demonstrated ability to conceive and execute well-reported enterprise stories narratives and packages that include visual and multimedia elements.
  • Be a good story editor who can identify holes in stories ask the right questions under pressure and have a working knowledge of what constitutes strong story organization as you work with reporters to make their work better.
  • Ability to guide reporters and help them prioritize brainstorm and talk through stories.
  • The ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
  • A strong level of accuracy honesty fairness and knowledge of libel laws. Must possess the ability to find holes in a story
  • Cultural competence and familiarity with best journalistic practices related to equity and inclusion.
  • Excellent grammar and language skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in both the print and digital news space.

Compensation:The full salary range for this position is $90000 to $127000. We typically pay between $90000 to $114600 depending on experience and qualifications.
