Job Duties

Contributes to the public safety mission by managing and leading assigned district staff to support the operation of an adult Community Corrections Unit and ensures implementation of departmental and divisional policies and procedures. Enhances public safety through the use of EvidenceBased Practices in the training and supervision of staff with a focus on the encouragement of better outcomes for probationers and parolees.

Provides supervision and monitoring of probationers from Courts and the Parole Board in accordance with DOC standards; to enhance public safety through supervision followup and the use of community resources and commitment or recommitment if necessary.

Probation Officers participate in Virginia Law Officers Retirement System (VaLORS) which is a defined benefit plan with enhanced benefits for hazardous duty. VaLORS participants are eligible to retire at age 60 with five years of creditable service or as early as age 50 with 25 years of creditable service. A reduced benefit is available at age 50 with five years of creditable service.

Minimum Qualifications

Progressively responsible work experience within Community Corrections. Experience supervising professional and support staff. Working knowledge of federal state and local laws governing Probation and Parole. Working knowledge of Virginia Department of Corrections Community Corrections practices policies and procedures. Knowledge of the criminal justice system and effective treatment modalities. Demonstrated ability to understand interpret and communicate the policies procedures and standards of the Department of Corrections. Competency in the use of EvidenceBased Practices to direct the resources of the district toward interventions that produce positive measurable outcomes. Ability to model strong leadership skills to act at all times as a positive force for prosocial change and to motivate staff to achieve their best work. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of individuals and public officials. Ability to speak and write effectively. Basic knowledge in Microsoft Office Suite.

Additional Considerations

Advanced knowledge training coursework certification or experience in criminal justice or related human services field. Experience in program development implementation and evaluation of various social services as related to probation in a state judicial system. Experience with planning budgeting analysis and administration.
