1stClass Outside Machinist Steel America
Purpose:
Steel America a division of Colonnas Shipyard is seeking experienced Outside Machinistswho are eager to expand their skillset and grow into Inside Machiningwork. While your experience in outside machining will serve as a strong foundation we offer the opportunity to build on that knowledge by learning precision machining techniques on lathes mills and other equipment.
Outside and inside machining are closely related tradesboth require a solid understanding of mechanical systems tolerances and problemsolving. At Steel America youll be handson in both areas with most of your work taking place in our wellequipped shop environment. This dualrole experience allows you to see projects through from disassembly to precision rebuild making your work more impactful and rewarding. Position will support operations at our shop in Norfolk VA.
Job Description:
  • Disassembles various types of equipment and machinery common to maritime vessels and/or general industry including but not limited to pumps valves winches gear boxes.
  • Assists in determining repairs and required to bring equipment to rebuilt status.
  • Setup and operation of drill presses.
  • Applies knowledge of materials including but not limited to bronze brass steel (mild and heattreated) and stainless steels in fabrication and repairs.
  • Responsible for the application and care of all standard shop measuring and hand tools.
  • Properly cares for and safely uses hand and power tools and all company property.
  • Works with other crafts as needed.
  • Overhaul maintenance testing of pumps valves turbines condensers shafts rudders winches.
  • Lays out passage holes on bulkheads decks and other surfaces for connections such as shafting and steam lines.
  • Installs below deck auxiliaries such as evaporators stills heaters pumps condensers and boilers and connects them to steam pipe systems.
  • Remove repair modify or overhaul various types of marine shipboard equipment and system such as valves pumps hydraulics turbines reduction gears generators anchor windlass and steering gears.
  • Set up and operate portable machining tools and equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and repair a variety of mechanical equipment may include ANSI pumps various types of compressors blowers fans gearboxes extruders mixers agitators and blenders.
  • Examines blueprints sketches drawings manuals specifications or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece sequence of operations and setup requirements.
  • Perform complex operations on various machine tools including drill presses lathes milling machines boring machines and precision grinding machines.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent and at least seven (7) years experience as a Marine Outside Machinist.
  • Must be familiar with the use of precision measuring instruments: outside/inside micrometers depth mics venires etc.
  • Must be able to dissemble repair and install various types of equipment and machinery such as pumps valves winches and gear boxes.
  • Must be capable of reading and interpreting blueprints and schematic drawings.
  • Must have own tools.
  • Must be able to apply basic machine shop math.
  • Must have the ability to work at heights in confined spaces and observe ships working protocol.
  • Must demonstrate layout proficiency.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience operating manualORCNC lathes and milling machines preferred:
    • Manual Machinist experience as follows:
      • Under minimal supervision a manual machinist sets up and operates manually controlled machines in skilled precision and bench work in the fabrication maintenance repair and alteration of machinery machine parts tools and equipment.
  • CNC Mills & Lathes experience as follows:
    • Requires knowledge of some CNC programming with the ability to perform minor program edits on the shop floor. Requires more than CNC operation experience.
  • Prefer Forklift and overhead crane experience.
  • Prefer knowledge of CNC programming.
  • Knowledge of Siemens controls preferred.
  • Experience with GibbsCAM software preferred.
Travel Requirements:
  • Minimal Travel; 10% or less.
Security Requirements:
  • Position requires US Citizenship.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job but no less than 20 lbs.
  • Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders work in extreme temperature environments aboard ships in shipyards under industrial conditions and in confined spaces including enter and moving through manholes.
  • May ride ships at sea for extended periods.
  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat humidity noise and dirty conditions working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
  • Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
  • Employee is required to operate trucks forklifts & manlifts.
  • While performing the duties of this job you may frequently be required to stand walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and required to reach with hands and arms climb and balance stoop squat kneel twist and crawl.
  • Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
  • Frequent use of respirator.
  • Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding cutting or working with molten metal.
