Location:Traverse Heights Elementary School

General Summary:

The Special Education Assistant (Early Childhood Special EducationECSE) provides assistance to Early Childhood Special Education students in the classroom. He/she reports to the principal and teacher of the program (Monday Thursday). Program runs September June.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assists Early Childhood Special Education students with all aspects of attending school.
  2. Works under the direction of the Special Education teacher to adapt lessons and materials to fit needs of Early Childhood Special Education students.
  3. Assists Early Childhood Special Education students in physical education music art lunch assemblies and recess as needed.
  4. Works in a consistent and individualized manner with Early Childhood Special Education
  5. Works in areas of selfhelp (toileting diapering dressing feeding dispensing medications per district policy).
  6. Assists with physical challenges (equipment wheelchairs scribing daily life skills communication devices).
  7. Maintains classroom records for Early Childhood Special Education students (attendance behavior documentation bus attendance lunch count) as requested by the teacher.
  8. Takes part in planning meetings as requested.
  9. Attends training or inservices.
  10. Accompanies Early Childhood Special Education students on field trips as requested
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities Required:

  1. Minimum education requirement is a high school diploma. Previous college credit WorkKeys certification or college degree preferred.
  2. Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with students and school personnel.
  3. Previous experience working with children.
  4. Ability to care for supervise and nurture children.
  5. Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  6. Ability to follow directions.
  7. Ability to work independently.
  8. Ability to assist with maintaining records of student progress.
  9. Excellent organizational skills.
  10. Ability to resolve conflict.
  11. Dependable reliable and protective of sensitive/confidential information.
  12. Willingness to attend training.
  13. Ability to remain calm under stressful situations.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  1. Must be able to report on a regular and consistent basis.
  2. Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
  3. Duties include frequent walking and physical activity as well as use of hands and arms for signaling and light lifting/carrying. Must have the ability to move about the classroom/building and school property including bending pushing/pulling lifting twisting climbing stooping or crouching to complete workrelated tasks with and without students.
  4. The ability to listen and effectively orally communicate information and ideas to a diverse population.
  5. Ability to effectively discern information and formulate appropriate action(s).
  6. Ability to critically think and provide appropriate solutions.
  7. Ability to work effectively and efficiently.

Environmental Conditions:

Incumbents work in indoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels. Duties may be completed in cold and hot temperatures including work on slippery and/or uneven surfaces. Work environment includes working around students school equipment and office equipment.

Work Schedules:

Must be available to report during the school year consistent with the districts school year calendar.

Background Checks:

The individual selected for this position will be required to pass a criminal history background check.
