As a Shelter Diversion Navigator you will manage our shelter diversion program and develop efforts to support pet owners in crisis who come to our shelters looking to surrender their animals or reunite with a lost pet. Youll be responsible for collaborating between Maricopa County Animal Care & Control and various community animal welfare and human services organizations to generate referrals and interventions that provide resources to help keep pets with their owners. Your oversight of the shelter diversion program and prevention efforts will significantly impact our shelters and help alleviate our growing position requires inoffice and/or customerfacing work for all hours worked.

Please note: This is a contract position. Your primary work location will be the East Valley with occasional assignments at the West Valley location as needed. Flexibility to work weekends and holidays is required. Employees may be assigned to any shift with varying days off based on the needs of the Department.

We Require
One year of experience coordinating and administering public programs or services at a human services or animal welfare organization
Bachelors degree in social services public administration business administration or a related field
A combination of postsecondary education and/or jobrelated experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a yearforyear basis
We Also Value
Bilingual skills in English and Spanish
Experience working in a companion animalrelated nonprofit or animal control organization
Experience working in a high customer contact/ customer service job
Job Contributions
Manages the shelter diversion program for the West Valley or East Valley shelter; strategizes and develops efforts to support pet owners in crisis who come to the shelters looking to surrender their animals or reunite with a lost pet
Develops and implements procedural guidelines to ensure funding compliance and utilizes community resources and funding in the most effective efficient and responsive manner to benefit the wellbeing of individuals served
Collaborates and networks with local partners to coordinate and facilitate resource aids such as no/lowcost spay/neuter surgeries vaccinations microchipping exams and other wellness services
Coordinates and facilitates referrals to available human services programs for rent and/or utility assistance food banks Domestic Violence resources etc. Creates and fosters partnerships with contacts in local human services organizations
Liaises between community partners and other Maricopa County Departments to organize outreach events and activities to increase public awareness of responsible pet ownership and social assistance programs
Provides empathetic comprehensive and prompt responses to residents that need assistance in maintaining responsible pet ownership by serving as the point of contact for all owners surrendering animals coming into the shelter
Strategizes and conducts community outreach to increase partnerships and encourage participation in program
Acts as a representative for the Department and generates community awareness about additional programs and services offered and identifies other partnership opportunities. Creates and distributes program outreach materials to the community
Maintains records of community resources and develops metrics and reports to track program success to Department management and suggestions for process improvement strategies
Working Conditions
Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona drivers license by the time of hire
Ability to lift up to 50100 lbs. occasionally 1025 lbs. frequently or up to 1020 lbs. constantly
Work is predominantly performed in an animal shelter with exposure to extreme and varying temperatures excessive noise dogs and cats with unknown temperaments or behaviors animal waste and fluids deceased animals cleaning chemicals and zoonotic diseases. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand and walk on all types of surfaces that are sometimes slippery uneven and rough
