Job Description

The NYC Department of Buildings is responsible for ensuring the safe and lawful use of buildings and properties by enforcing the NYC Construction Codes Energy Code and Zoning Resolution. We facilitate compliant development with integrity efficiency and professionalism. The Elevators Inspections unit performs inspections of the construction alteration capacity and safety of equipment and devices including passenger freight and sidewalk elevators escalators dumbwaiters wheelchair lifts conveyers personal hoists and amusement devices.

Under direction:
Responsible for reviewing the complaint intake process to identify interpret analyze and appropriately address complaints made to the Department involving allegations of noncompliant conditions at various properties.
Monitors relevant data sources including but not limited to 311 referrals unit databases BSMART BIS DOB Now etc. to ensure accuracy of complaint assignments.
Identifies analyzes and interprets trends or patterns within available data sets.
Administratively resolves duplicative and multiple complaints.
Investigates and when possible administratively resolves unsubstantiated complaints utilizing department records.
Filters and cleans data by reviewing relevant reports printouts and indicators to locate and correct complaint categorization problems.
Refers complaints to appropriate jurisdictions i.e. City State & Federal Agencies or other DOB units when necessary.
Works with Unit supervisors to prioritize operational needs when required.
Crossreferences data from primary or secondary data sources to improve resolution efficiency.
Possesses knowledge of how DOB NOW operates and assists personnel with any issues.
Oversees service levels and notifies unit management of any discrepancies.
Monitors multiple complaints and notifies supervisors.
Assists Unit management with the handling of cease use and restore to service inspections.
Performs research and reviews elevator and/or vertical transportation related construction documents as required.
Monitors and oversees Elevator Unit reports and audits.
May be called upon to perform additional responsibilities based on the operational needs of the Unit.

REMOTE WORK
This position may be eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week pursuant to the Remote Work Pilot Program.

Qualifications :

1. Five years of fulltime satisfactory experience in the actual assembly installation repair or design of elevators; as a maintenance elevator machinist with elevator manufacturers of recognized standing; as a maintenance elevator mechanic working on various standard makes of elevators; or as an inspector of the construction alteration maintenance or safety of elevators; or

2. Three years of experience as described in 1 above and two years of formal training or education in an accredited college technical school or trade school in courses in or directly related to installation repair or design of elevators; or

years of experience as described in 1 above and sixty (60) credits towards a degree in applied mechanics mechanical engineering mechanical engineering technology electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology from an accredited college or university; or

4. Completion of an apprentice program a minimum of three years in length in the maintenance elevator mechanic trade or elevator inspection and one of the following: (a) Two years of experience as described in 1 above; or (b) Two years of education as described in 2 above; or (c) 60 credits as described in 3 above; or

5. A license as a professional engineer or registered architect issued pursuant to the New York State Education Law.

6. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to 1 2 3 or 4 above.

7. To be eligible for placement to Assignment Level II individuals other than licensed professional engineers or registered architects must have after meeting the minimum requirements at least one additional year of experience as described in 1 above.

8. To be eligible for placement to Assignment Level III individuals other than licensed professional engineers or registered architects must have after meeting the requirements for Assignment Level II above at least one year of experience as described in 1 above in a supervisory capacity.
