Reports to:  Dr. Alireza Rabi
Work Model: InOffice
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Shifts: Monday to Friday
Status: Temporary FullTime

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

Animal Handling & Surgical Support

  • Assist in preparation sedation and monitoring of rats and pigs undergoing surgical and perfusion procedures.
  • Perform intubation vascular access and maintenance of anesthesia and analgesia under veterinary and PI supervision.
  • Monitor vital signs and adjust anesthetic depth intraoperatively as required.
  • Support sterile surgical setups organ recovery and postoperative animal care in both survival and nonsurvival studies.
  • Ensure compliance with ACC/IACUC protocols and maintain detailed animal health and procedural records.

Experimental Work

  • Assist with setup and operation of ex vivo perfusion systems for isolated heart studies.
  • Collect tissue blood and perfusate samples for downstream analysis.
  • Prepare reagents and solutions and perform routine biochemical assays as directed.

Lab Maintenance & Operations

  • Maintain lab cleanliness inventory and proper function of lab equipment (e.g. anesthesia machines perfusion pumps centrifuges).
  • Assist with sample labeling storage and cataloguing (e.g. frozen tissues paraffin blocks).
  • Ensure availability and safe handling of gases (e.g. oxygen isoflurane) and coordinate with veterinary and animal care teams as needed.

Data & Documentation

  • Record experimental observations surgical notes and sample metadata with accuracy and consistency.
  • Contribute to lab documentation including protocols SOPs and biosafety logs.

Working Conditions:

  • Work will involve direct handling of live animals including rats and pigs and may require flexible hours including early mornings or evenings.
  • Position requires physical stamina and the ability to stand for extended periods in operating rooms and animal facilities.
  • All necessary safety biosafety and veterinary training will be provided by UHN and the Comparative Research Platform.

Qualifications :

Education:

  • BSc or college diploma in Veterinary Technology Animal Science Physiology Biomedical Science or a related discipline.

Experience:

  • For RTII: Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in an academic or veterinary research setting.
  • For RTIII: Minimum 4 years of experience with increasing technical responsibilities.
  • Some prior experience in anesthesia induction and monitoring intubation and analgesia protocols in both rodents and pigs is encouraged.
  • Some experience in handling large and small animal models including perioperative care and humane euthanasia is encouraged.
  • Familiarity with basic laboratory procedures including sample collection centrifugation and reagent preparation is required.
  • Prior experience in ex vivo organ perfusion or surgical support is an asset.

Skills:

  • Strong manual dexterity and attention to detail in animal handling and sample collection.
  • Knowledge of aseptic technique animal welfare regulations and institutional animal care protocols.
  • Ability to work independently follow detailed protocols and communicate effectively with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Organizational skills for coordinating supplies maintaining records and ensuring readiness for experimental procedures.
