Job Description

Position Summary
Position Overview The Associate Vice President and Vice Chancellor for Research Bloomington ( AVP / VCR ) will play a central leadership role in research development fostering largescale interdisciplinary research including research teams that engage and amplify IU Bloomington faculty expertise. The AVP / VCR will be responsible for advancing achievement of ambitious Pillar 2 goals outlined in the IU 2030 Strategic Plan including those specific to IU Bloomington. Other key responsibilities of the AVP / VCR include participating in decisionmaking processes regarding research space utilization updates to promotion and tenure guidelines and ongoing efforts to foster a culture of continued growth of externally funded research and creative activity. The position reports jointly to the IU Vice President for Research and the IU Bloomington Chancellor serving as an active and contributing member of both the IU Research and the Chancellors respective leadership team ensuring close collaboration between those two administrative units and with Bloomington faculty academic leadership external partners faculty across the university and others as appropriate. Indiana University is one of the top research universities in the world with more than $785 million in sponsored research in FY2024. Growing transformative research and creativity innovation industry engagement and commercialization are key goals in IU 2030: The Indiana University Strategic Plan. This is an internal search open to all IU Bloomington tenured full professors. Applicants must submit their application by Friday June posting will close and applications will no longer be accepted after June 20. Applications will be reviewed after June 20. The new AVP / VCR is expected to begin on Monday August 4 2025. This is a fulltime 12 month position. Should the chosen candidate wish to do so the chancellor and vice president for research may consider accommodating the coordination of some ongoing research engagement. Applicants are strongly encouraged to discuss their intent and interest in the position with their chair/dean in advance of submitting the formal application. Key Opportunities and Responsibilities 1. Research Development Leadership and Coordination The AVP / VCR will serve as an active and contributing member of both the IU Research and the Chancellors respective leadership team keeping the VPR and Chancellor apprised of key collaborations and initiatives related to IU 2030 Strategic Plan Pillar 2 goals as well as Goal 1 of the IUB 2030 Strategic Plan. Importantly the AVP / VCR will develop and lead research development activities to support and engage IU Bloomington faculty ensuring coordination of all related activities with all members of the IU Research leadership team and relevant members of the Chancellors leadership team. Specifically it will be a top priority to work in close collaboration with the Associate Vice President for Research Development as well as the Associate Vice President for Innovation and Commercialization Associate Vice President and Vice Chancellor for Research IU Indianapolis and the Associate Vice President for Centers Institutes and Core Services/Facilities to coordinate support for and growth of externally funded research across campuses. 2. Incentivizing Translational Research Activities at IU A major emphasis of IU 2030 is to significantly expand partnership with industry and to incentivize faculty members and researchers to conduct translational research with industry patent discoveries start new ventures and commercialize new products. These efforts are major focus of the new IU LAB . The AVP / VCR has the opportunity to play a significant role in advancing and incentivizing translational activities at IU. 3. Continuing to Advance Framework for Research Space Allocation at IU Bloomington In April 2025 a new framework was launched for allocating research space at IU Bloomington. The AVP / VCR has the opportunity to play a major leadership role in optimizing current use of research space at IU Bloomington and planning for new space. 4. Strategic Plan Reporting Prepare and provide monthly updates regarding progress made on Goal 1 of Pillar 2 of the IUB 2030 Strategic Plan with specific emphasis on fostering faculty collaborations to seek and obtain largescale external funding for research that will be included in the IU Research monthly strategic plan progress report.
