Job Duties

Ready to advance your career and technology through communications in the Commonwealth The awardwinning VITA communications team is seeking an experienced dynamic and highly collaborative leader to serve as the agencys assistant director of communications. This position will help oversee the daytoday operations of the internal external and customer communications functions as well as support the enterprise web services team and multimedia creative services team.

The assistant director will use solid program management skills to drive critical stakeholders awareness of and connections to VITAs programs and services. Audiences include nearly 500 VITA team members and contractors 65000 state employees at nearly 70 state agencies and ultimately multiple segments of Virginias population of 8.7 million residents and many more visitors. The assistant director is responsible for the following functions:
Provides support to the deputy chief of administration and director of communications on special projects and initiatives issues management and crisis communications program strategy and crossagency operations where needed.
Serves in place of the director of communications when called upon including highprofile projects and initiatives serving as agency spokesperson and in emergency/crisis communications needs.
Leads multiple functions including internal communications external communications supports customer communications web technology services and the multimedia creative services functions.
Serves as a working leader digging in to support teams on key program and project needs such as writing working with the media building presentations leading planning and execution of large events supporting key statewide committees etc.
Builds strong collaborative relationships and works extremely well with others at multiple levels across agency teams to drive desired results and help simplify complex topics.
Helps to plan develop implement and oversee internal and external communications strategies to ensure messages are delivered clearly and effectively to the right audiences at the right time using the right platforms.
Analyzes team priorities resources and staffing levels and recommends adjustments as needed.
Provides administrative leadership when needed including development of department procedures processes and reporting; uses data to guide decision making; supports budgetary leadership of team resources.
Leads staff to provide excellent customer service think innovatively about solutions and try new ideas with minimal risk while helping them develop their career paths and enhance their skill sets.

Work Schedule:

The traditional work schedule is Monday Friday from approximately 8:30 a.m. 5:30 p.m. However this position will be required to respond to emergencies/impactful customer needs outside of the normal work schedule as needed. This position is currently eligible for one day of telework.

Minimum Qualifications

Have at least seven years of communications experience in a fastpaced environment with at least three years of supervisory experience
Progressively responsible experience at midcareer and senior levels leading the public relations function and serving in a dynamic creative and teamfocused environment
Proven track record in creative content development especially in writing for digital and social media forms
Demonstrated commitment to learning and implementing communications and leadership best practices
Must be an exceptional writer with proficiency in Associated Press Style
Ability to develop and implement communications plans
Ability to work both independently and with a team
Ability to dive into crises lead communications efforts and engage customers appropriately
Experience working with media at all levels and understand how to respond to inquiries accurately and effectively in a timely manner
A working understanding of marketing and branding principles
Experience leading development and execution of large events

Additional Considerations

Accreditation in public relations
Familiar with Virginia statelevel government and/or technology
Proven track record in leading teams to drive desired results
