Job Description

Position: 0.8Physical Education Teacher 0.2 Elementary Teacher (Grade 1)

General Description:

The Physical Education Teacher position (0.8 FTE) is primarily responsible for teaching physical education as it relates to the district curriculum and the Massachusetts State Frameworks.The Physical Education Teacher creates a flexible gradeappropriate physical education and wellness program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth establishes effective rapport with students and motivates students to develop the skills attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for lifelong wellness in accordance with each students ability.

This role supports our Grade 1 Elementary instruction. The Grade 1 Elementary Classroom Teacher position (0.2 FTE)is primarily responsible for planning organizing and implementingan appropriate instructional program in a Grade 1 elementary learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential in conjunction with the coteacher.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and implement effective standardsbased units and lesson plans
  • Teaches knowledge and skills in physical fitness health education rhythms and dance and individual dual or team sports utilizing curriculum designated by WPS
  • Analyzes demonstrates and explains basic skills knowledge and strategies of formal sports games rhythms and fundamentals of body movement
  • Provides appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the overall safety of students
  • Assess the learning of students in a way that ensures student growth
  • Collaborate with colleagues and the building/district administration to ensure quality instruction/programming for all students
  • Communicate effectively with parents/families and community members; Communicates with school counselors on student progress
  • Administers testing in accordance with testing practices
  • Establish a classroom structure that values relationships between child to child child to curriculum teacher to child teacher to families and communities and classrooms to schools through the intentional implementation of an appropriate curriculum
  • Teach content and skills across elementary subjects (Reading Writing Math Science Social Studies) using standardsbased curriculum guidelines from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
  • Utilize district curriculum materials to design lessons and activities to guide support and challenge all students including those with disabilities and English language Learners.
  • Assist with Adapted Physical Education as needed.

Qualifications Required:

  • Hold a current MA DESE licensure in Physical Education
  • Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university both within the United States and/or internationally
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing to children and adults
  • Ability to meet the Standards of Effective Teaching established by the Massachusetts Model System for Educators as outlined above.
  • At least two years of lead teaching experience

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of second language Spanish or Portuguese preferred
  • Experience in a school setting
  • Experience as a Physical Education Teacher
  • Masters Degree Preferred
  • Hold a valid Massachusetts Teaching License in Elementary Education (Grades 16) and the SEI endorsement

Physical Demands:

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms outdoors and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height; and to bend stoop sit on the floor climb stairs walk and reach overhead.
