Thurston County Clerks Office is seeking a professional motivated and dependable candidate for the position of Family Court Facilitator to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity for those with excellent customer service experience seeking to begin their career in the court system work in a great environment and receive excellent benefits.
The Family Court Facilitator is responsible for providing a broad spectrum of legal information and technical assistance to selfrepresented individuals in dissolutions legal separations paternity actions meretricious relationship proceedings adoptions child support modifications/ adjustments parenting plan modifications actions for contempt/enforcement of orders and petitions for visitation/custody by third parties cases (Title 26 RCW). Work assignment requires specialized administrative and paralegal work on all family law matters and extensive expertise in complex divorce issues and court operations. Responsibilities may include analyzing factual information and documents researching and drafting pleadings and creating detailed instructions for each process.
The Facilitators perform legal research and are responsible for designing developing and maintaining procedures instructions pleadings informational brochures and other materials related to the program. Prepares programs and conducts weekly public education seminars and training sessions for customers. Works independently in accordance with general directions and interprets and applies courts rules statutes and rules of procedure. The Family Court Facilitator also serves as a community liaison and referral for selfrepresented individuals court personnel and internal and external agencies.
Essential functions may include but are not limited to the following:
- Interviews pro se litigants to ascertain legal direction and determine what steps are needed to complete their case. Investigates facts and underlying issues; reviews legal files and documents and all other information relevant to the issues. Performs legal research of statutes cases and state and local court rules regarding family law matters. Performs a variety of duties including: reviewing case files for completeness; monitoring compliance with state and local court rules statutory authority and court procedures; reviewing pleadings and legal documents for compliance with applicable law and any previously entered orders. Uses Superior Court Management Information System to assist litigants in tracking the activity of their cases; performs child support calculations.
- Completes legal research and writes detailed instructions for form packets focused on complex family law actions. Prepares specific pleadings required for specific issues which are presented for judicial approval. Creates and develops alternative methods for presentation of instructions/information (e.g. video power point training classes brochures and other written material) including scriptwriting or curriculum production and presentation.
- Acts as a liaison between judges court commissioners court staff and the public. Screens requests for contact with judicial officers and responds to various questions from lawyers the press other staff and the general public in person and by phone.
- Participates in various state sponsored committees committed to ensuring access to justice for self represented litigants; networks with various legal programs county state and nationwide. Serves as liaison with other agencies and jurisdictions.
- Assists selfrepresented litigants find legal assistance programs social services DSHS Division of Child Support CPS Prosecuting Attorneys or other state County and community services. Refers individuals in need of attorney involvement to local lawyer referral opportunities as well as alternative dispute referral programs and community resources providing various family law forms and instructions. Updates and maintains community referral lists for family law related issues providing instruction and training sources as appropriate.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work Environment Work is performed primarily in an office environment with lifting required on occasion. A physical hazard may occur from agitated defendants awaiting or during trails or hearings.
- Schedule Monday Friday 8:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m. Workload demands may occasionally require work outside the assigned work hours.
- Travel Requirements Occasional travel may be required to attend meetings or trainings.
- Customer Interactions Daily interactions via inperson phone and video with Thurston County staff and the public.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED paralegal certification and five years experience in court procedures and processes are required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the course work and working knowledge of human behavior family dynamics and domestic violence; and cultural diversity is essential.
- Working knowledge of statutes court rules court procedures and processes in all aspects of domestic relations law; the court system including roles and responsibilities of court departments and related agencies key players and case flow.
- Ability to utilize a computer and applicable software applications including word processing and database management to successfully perform the essential duties of the position.
- Must possess exceptional oral and written communication skills to be able to disseminate complex legal information to litigants of various education and social levels. Possesses advanced interviewing skills and techniques and adept in handling crisis situations and volatile clients.
