Counselor Job Description Meridian School Meridian School Counselor Job Description

Founded in 2011 Meridian School is a public tuitionfree charter school open to all students living in Williamson County. As a charter school we are a school of choice offering an inquirybased curriculum and continuum for the International Baccalaureate Program K12. Job Description

Meridian Counselors support the socialemotional needs of students in a variety of ways. We adhere to the Texas Model Guidance and Counseling Program as set forth by the Texas Education Agency and both the American Counseling Association and American School Counseling Association Standards and Code of Ethics. A brief description of tasks associated within the four main components of the program follows:

Key Responsibilities Guidance
  • Plan develop curriculum and facilitate implementation of proactive lessons that prepare our students for upcoming transitions and optimum social and emotional growth.
  • Topics may include: goal setting/decision making career education financial aid communication/conflict resolution peer relations assertiveness drug and alcohol awareness/prevention and navigating social media/technology safely and responsibly.
  • In the spring a major focus is preparing our students for the upcoming year with course selection course sequencing and transitions from primary to middle middle to high and postsecondary plans.
Individual Planning
  • Middle School: Assisting with 5th6th and 8th9th transitions.
  • High School: Oneonone meetings for grades 912 with students and parents.
  • All levels: Scheduling and ensuring students are in the correct classes academic advising for struggling students or those wishing to accelerate college and career aspirations social skills/selfesteem selfadvocacy values identification problemsolving communication strategies stress management and identity development.
Responsive Services
  • Provide community resource information to parents and students.
  • Respond to crisis situations including suicidal ideation selfharm child abuse grief and loss panic attacks and other mental health concerns that require immediate attention.
  • Help students navigate conflicts through peer mediation when there is no imbalance of power and both parties are willing.
  • Coordinate with campus behavioral specialists and provide shortterm individual counseling support for students with behavioral issues impacting classroom and common area settings.
System Support
  • Support teachers in mandated reporter obligations (CPS reports).
  • Assist with professional development related to mental health/social emotional needs.
  • Communicate opportunities and resources to parents and students; coordinate/partner with agencies and universities (e.g. GENAustin Underage Drinking Prevention).
  • Assist parents/teachers with release of information requests (e.g. ADHD scales).
  • Collaborate with campus staff parents and stakeholders to meet the unique needs of our students.

Qualifications
  • Valid Texas School Counselor Certificate
  • *Applicants currently in a stateapproved school counselor preparation program will be considered
Work Environment

This position operates in a professional nonsmoking office environment which at times can be busy with moderate noise and many unscheduled interruptions. This role will routinely use standard office equipment such as computers phones photocopiers and filing cabinets.
