Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. *Works under the direction of the Center for Language & Technology (CLT) Director and serves as the lead IT Specialist to support the CLT and affiliated programs under the CLT.
  2. *Consults with the CLT Director and staff in the evaluation of new technologies for longrange and strategic planning for CLT IT needs.
  3. *Conducts needs assessments and creates a comprehensive information technology plan for the CLT including recommendations for support service strategies for language departments and labs.
  4. *Participates in the conceptualization of technology projects in requests for sponsored funding and in the support of sponsored projects.
  5. *Recommends develops and maintains custom applications in support of language learning teaching and research including Webbased applications with database driven dynamic content.
  6. *Oversees projects to develop specialized software or multimedia products.
  7. *Oversees the timely server backup and establishes restore procedures.
  8. *Supervises a team of student assistants responsible for supporting the IT initiatives of the CLT.
  9. *Advises faculty and staff committees on ITintensive hires technical specs for research labs and online research and development projects.
  10. *In collaboration with a peer IT Specialist oversees and manages the multiple network and server systems in the IT facilities supported by projects/programs and centers including diagnosis and resolution of connection and network problems.
  11. *Sets up and maintains technical standards documentation and user guidelines for servers and web applications.
  12. *Oversees the installation configuration and maintenance of web server software infrastructure both in the cloud and onpremises.
  13. *Specifies technical requirements for networking servers hardware and software. Advises regarding the allocation of resources for their maintenance.
  14. *Adapts and applies technologies to establish and maintain necessary hardware interfaces with computers and software for language learning teaching and research.
  15. *Oversees that network security standards are met and that fixes and updates are applied in a timely manner.
  16. *Evaluates user needs to develop technical requirements.
  17. *Evaluates and provides complex technical support for computer hardware software and audiovisual equipment ensuring compatibility and applicability for language learning teaching and research.
  18. *Develops and maintains software in support of language learning teaching and research.
  19. *Develops training programs on applications developed by the CLT used for research or instruction.
  20. *Responsible for ensuring compliance with University policies and procedures including compliance with security ADA requirements current trends and best practice in the area of information technology. Applies content in daily operations and disseminate information as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Possession of a pertinent baccalaureate educational degree in Computer Science and 5 years of progressively responsible professional information technology experience with responsibilities for System Administration and Software Development of which 2 years of the experience must have been comparable in scope and complexity to the next lower payband in the University of Hawaii broadband system; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education knowledge skills and abilities as indicated.
  2. Considerable working knowledge of System Administration and Software Development as demonstrated by the broad knowledge and understanding of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving information technology concepts principles and methodology.
  3. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of the broad technology systems hardware and software associated with System Administration and Software Development.
  4. Demonstrated ability to recognize a wide range of intricate problems use reasoning and logic to determine accurate causes and apply principles and practices to determine evaluate integrate and implement practical and thorough solutions in an effective and timely manner.
  5. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations groups team leaders and members and individuals.
  7. If applicable for supervisory work demonstrated ability to lead subordinates manage work priorities and projects and manage employee relations.
  8. Working knowledge of the applicability of information technology to a variety of situations.
  9. Demonstrated knowledge of the terminology accepted practices and procedures of the field.
  10. Understanding of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving information technology concepts principles and methodology.
  11. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of software and network development PCs Macs LINUX workstations and standard peripheral equipment.
  12. Ability to work a variable work schedule; and work outside normally scheduled work hours including day night weekend and/or holiday hours as needed.
  13. Familiarity with database driven dynamic web programming using serverside code.
  14. Working knowledge of database design and maintenance.
  15. Demonstrated ability to develop and articulate information technology plans for institutional units with various constituents.
  16. Working knowledge of a programming language such as PHP Python etc.
  17. Working knowledge of JavaScript HTML and Structured Query Language (SQL).
  18. Ability to work with a varied group of faculty students and staff.
  19. Knowledge of coding practices necessary for developing webbased applications.

Desirable Qualifications:
  1. Knowledge of a range of security procedures.
  2. Working knowledge and understanding of the broad technology systems hardware and software associated with one or more of the following: desktop publishing web design and phonetic psycholinguistic sociolinguistic and computer linguistic research.
  3. Knowledge of opensource technologies JavaScript HTML5 SQL MySQL Postgres Apache Web Server Technology Tomcat Redhat Git.
  4. Experience with a wide range of commercial software hardware and audiovisual equipment.
  5. Knowledge of digital signal processing.
  6. Masters degree in Information and Computer Science or related fields.
  7. Course work in fields related to one or more of the following: information sciences information technology speech science natural language technology linguistics cognitive psychology media studies and studies in language literature and writing.
  8. Considerable working knowledge of digital video and audio equipment.
