****Applicants seeking shortterm or parttime work with the University of Hawaii may apply for Casual Hire positions which include administrative professional and technical (APT) or instructionaltype positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular BOR and Civil Service employees (i.e. paid holidays/leave). Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for fulltime employees and up to 1 calendar year for parttime employees.

Schedule: Monday Friday up to 40 hours/week
Temporary/Permanent: Temporary; not to exceed 89 days

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Participate in the development of polymer and ceramic composites and nanocomposites including design analysis
fabrication characterizations and testing.
2. Participate in custom design and operation of Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) furnaces Vacuum and High
Temperature Furnaces Hot Press Operation and Autoclave.
3. Manufacturing and postprocessing of various forms of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and their inclusions in polymers and
ceramic composites to develop highperformance multifunctional nanocomposites.
4. Evaluating the performance of preceramic polymers and their pyrolysis temperatures for the ceramic
composite/nanocomposite systems.
5. Performing machining measuring testing and data acquisition & recording of the developed composites and
nanocomposites according to ASTM standards.
6. Manufacturing samples and performing mechanical testing per prescribed test methods such as ASTM.
7. Assist in manufacturing and test equipment development calibrations and operation.
8. Recording evaluating and reporting test results on written forms and in electronic spreadsheets.
9. Developing technical reports and presentations as well as patent documents and research papers.
10. Maintain samples manufacturing and testing preparation areas.
11. Other relevant duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering Materials Science or Chemical Engineering with handson skills.
2. Familiarity with metal polymer and ceramic composites manufacturing and testing techniques.
3. Proficiency with computeraided design and analysis software such as Solid Works & ANSYS.
4. Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
5. Familiarity with programming.
6. Familiarity with safety training.

Desired Qualifications:

1. Ability to read and interpret specifications review test plans procedures equipment instructions data analysis and
follow detailed verbal and written instructions.
2. Familiarity with Optical Microscopic Characterizations such as SEM TEM AFM etc.
3. Familiarity and experience with the various manufacturing techniques such as Drilling Lathe Milling CNC Welding
Waterjet 3D Printing for Polymers and Ceramics etc.
4. Familiarity with various manufacturing ovens and furnaces.
5. Familiarity and experience with Autoclaving Hot Press and CVD Furnace operations.
6. Familiarity with polymer and ceramic composites manufacturing.
7. Familiarity with Mechanical Testing Machines (such as Instron).
8. Familiarity with Nanomaterials and Nanocomposites Processing and Manufacturing.
9. Familiarity and experience with hardware development.
