You will be updated with latest job alerts via emailThis is a parttime position that is not eligible for Benefits. This position is scheduled to work 5 hours per day 5 days per week (12:30 PM 5:30 PM).
General Responsibilities
This position is for ensuring the safety security and welfare of all students faculty staff and visitors in an assigned school. The work involves being highly visible in the halls parking lots cafeteria rest rooms grounds stairwells and other locations for the purpose of ensuring order and discipline preventing crime investigating criminal acts and detaining and apprehending persons violating the law on school premises. The work requires excellent rapport with students to encourage proper behavior and cooperation with school administrators and law enforcement agencies in accordance with established policies procedures and worker selects and applies appropriate effective methods of crime prevention intervention and enforcement in different situations.
Education and Experience
Requires a high school diploma or possession of a GED and a valid drivers license. Some college level course work is not required but welcomed. Training with the police department or recent law enforcement experience is also welcomed.
Essential Job Functions
Assists Executive Director and staff in stopping altercations arguments or other forms of disruptive or illegal behavior.
Maintains alertness to illegal substances or weapons being carried or stored on school property.
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Good knowledge of standard security procedures and the regulations and laws relating to school building and grounds conduct and building intrusion and trespassing.
Good knowledge of security/law enforcement principles and practices.
Good knowledge of the laws of arrest the court system and procedures.
Good knowledge of the attendance policies and overall rules and regulations of The Governors School for the Arts.
Some knowledge of techniques of investigations and report writing and the ability to orally present testimony regarding the facts.
Some knowledge and understanding of child/adolescent growth and development as appropriate to assignment.
Some knowledge of and ability to use drug test kits and alcohol breath kits.
Ability to effectively communicate and interact with students faculty administrators law enforcement agencies and the general public.
Ability to exercise good judgement under potentially dangerous conditions.
Ability to maintain records and write security reports; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to read and understand laws policies rules and regulations and procedures and to follow written and oral directions.
Ability to maintain effective rapport with students staff administrators and general public.
Physical Attributes
Ability to perform exterior checks on foot which may require crossing areas with heavy traffic and may be poorly lit.
Ability to stand at assigned station and/or patrol halls for considerable periods of time.
Ability to climb several flights of stairs.
Ability to tolerate use of protective masks and gloves.
Sufficient mobility and dexterity to respond quickly to student incidents or intrusion which may involve measures to detain individuals who are running away jumping fences or barriers.
Sufficient strength to restrain/detain aggressive students intruders and trespassers who physically resist.
Must pass continuing physical agility tests.
License/Certification
Must successfully complete a security certification course given by Norfolk Public Schools within ninety (90) days from date of employment.
Possession of a Conservator of the Peace CPR Certificate.
Registration as an Officer of the Court.
Hazards
Security Officers are subject to the ongoing hazards which are endemic to security work and public healthsafety protection work; the work involves the potential for danger and physical injuries from trespassers students or others with weapons or persons committing acts which are violations of law requiring sufficient training in restraint techniques to avoid personal harm and bodily injury.
Unusual Demands/Special Requirements
Must be subject to and pass continuing criminal records checks and drug/alcohol testing.
Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.
Work is subject to immediate response to an emergency in any part of the location assigned or any other location used by The Governors School for the Arts as needed.
