The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of highquality drinking water managing wastewater and storm water and reducing air noise and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country with nearly 6000 employees. DEPs water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the systems 2000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
The Bureau of Engineering Design & Construction (BEDC) currently has a portfolio of capital projects valued at $35B and another $13.6B projected over the next 10year commitment plan. The projects BEDC implements allows DEP as a whole to continue to operate and maintain an exemplary water supply system.
BEDCs Special Projects Capital Program (SPCP) is responsible for the planning design construction management and execution of capital projects aimed at upgrading and maintaining the citys existing critical water and wastewater infrastructures. The upgrades help support our operating bureaus; the Bureau of Water Supply (BWS) the Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations (BWSO) and the Bureau of Wastewater Treatment (BWT). This work is essential to preserving the integrity reliability and quality of the water supply system spanning DEPs extensive network of Wastewater Resources and Recovering Facilities (WRRF) plants dams bridges shafts reservoirs tunnels pumping stations ultraviolet disinfection and filtration systems and other associated facilities across New York City and its watershed. SPCP also leads all DesignBuild initiatives across all DEP Operating Bureaus both within the City and in Upstate areas. Through this program BEDC delivers a robust multibilliondollar capital portfolio that supports the development of new infrastructure and the rehabilitation of existing facilities.
BEDC seeks to hire a Project Manager Intern to be an Assistant Project Manager for the Special Projects Capital Program (SPCP) directorate located in Valhalla NY. Under direct supervision the selected candidate will report to an Accountable Manager. S/he will assist in supervising water and wastewater system projects within the City and in Upstate areas. These projects may include work at WRRF plants dams bridges shafts tunnels reservoirs pump stations ultraviolet disinfection and filtration systems and other DEP facilities across New York City and its watershed. The selected candidate will be responsible for assisting with planning coordination and the implementation of the design and construction of projects in the NYC area and its watershed. S/he will assist in the review of plans for the construction demolition or alteration of structures for compliance with the provisions of law rules or regulations. S/he will monitor permit requirements and assist in resolving project issues task. Under direct supervision the selected candidate will also conduct reliable and skilled field condition investigations and prepare accurate reports on physical observation. S/he will also conduct thorough review of contract documents codes and regulations and accurately compare them to project requirements to identify deficiencies. The selected candidate will actively participate in field investigations to develop alternative approaches and solutions to meet project objectives. S/he will also attend all required environmental compliance and safety related training classes.
PREFERRED SKILLS
Candidates must be able to demonstrate critical thinking skills and effective independent data analysis
Excellent oral and written communication skills ability to meet deadlines and an ability to be flexible in assignment of work responsibilities
Understanding of water and heavy civil infrastructure design practices and standards
Understanding of project management principals specifically the procedures used by DEP
This position requires operation of a motor vehicle to perform site visits equipment testing inspections and to attend meetings with project stakeholders
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite products (Word Excel etc.)

Qualifications :
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in engineering engineering technology architecture landscape architecture architectural technology construction construction management construction technology sustainable design urban planning urban studies city planning transportation planning business administration or public administration; or
2. A masters degree in architecture that is the first professional degree in architecture from an accredited college or university.
