The Project Cost Engineer (PCE) focus is on how its made; the manufacturing details for how components are produced and how tools are fabricated. Understanding a parts manufacturing process along with industrial constraints allows the PCE to apply activity based costing principles to the process to develop a technical cost for a part as well as determine what production tools and capital equipment are required. In the same manner understanding how a tool is fabricated allows the PCE to develop a cost for the associated tooling. PCEs are a check and balance to make certain the manufacturing process and tooling / capital equipment are aligned to the annual capacity planning volume and the forecast planning volume. A parts piece cost is also known as a variable cost which includes supplier capital in the machine burden; tooling cost is also known as investment. A component price is derived by adding commercial cost SG&A and profit to the manufacturing cost of a component.
