Role Purpose

The primary purpose of a Trainee in Anaesthesia is to provide anaesthesia care in a complex clinical environment. This will be done under supervision appropriate to the level of training of the applicant and in line with recommendations of the training program of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) or as part of the CICM or ACEMtraining programme orDiploma of Rural Generalist Anaesthesia wherethis is applicable. Trainees are expected to extend their knowledge and skills in managing anaesthesia across multiple subspeciality areas of anaesthesia in order to meet the professional standards set by ANZCA. They are required to deliver anaesthesia perioperative care and pain management services inside and outside the operating rooms and to perform other duties during rotations to other areas as directed. Trainees will participate as a multidisciplinary team member across key areas of anaesthetics including:

anaesthesia and sedation (including obstetric anaesthesia where relevant)

regional anaesthesia
airway management
pain medicine
perioperative medicine
resuscitation
trauma and crisis management

Trainees will deliver anaesthesia intensive care medicine acute pain management and perioperative care at St Vincents Hospital and its secondment hospitals. Rotations include St George Hospital The Royal Hospital for Women The Childrens Hospital Westmead The Wollongong Hospital and Wagga Wagga Base Hospital. Appointees must be prepared to rotate to all the above hospitals and participate in afterhours rosters.


Positions are accredited by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. Applicants must have at least three years hospital experience.

Key Accountabilities

  • Contribute to the provision of anaesthesia services under appropriate supervision. Concurrently develop greater clinical expertise and knowledge in anaesthesia practice and competencies in line with training requirements enabling the provision of safe patient care in a variety of clinical contexts. This includes performing airway management techniques administering general regional & local anaesthesia sedation implementing pain management strategies as part of the acute pain management team participating in the assessment & resuscitation of trauma patients and implementing instructions in the general management of patients (including preadmission theatre management record keeping post anaesthesia care progress reviews and change to care plans).
  • Foster effective therapeutic relationships and shared decision making Communicate patientrelevant information in a timely and clear manner to patients and their families/carers and all staff involved in the patients care to facilitate shared decisionmaking and timely information transfer.
  • Ensure accurate documentation in relation to patient care with confidentiality and privacy to ensure timely and efficient communication and that patient records are effective and accurate for current and future use. This includes preparing treatment plans correspondence with other treating practitioners entry into medical records referrals discharge summaries reports certificates and any other documentation in relation to patient care and management.
  • Teach and supervise other clinical staff to ensure an optimal learning environment promote growth and development of others and to develop skills in teaching enable them to develop the competenceand knowledge required for responsible practice promote team building and a supportive environment enhance their performance and monitor their welfare. This includes participating in/assisting with/leading formal education sessions providing learning experiences on the job case presentations giving constructive feedback and informal instruction undertaking formal/informal assessments role modelling and mentoring clinical supervision checking work is conducted to standards contributing to professional development assisting to solve problems and clinical workload management.
  • Contribute to scholarly knowledge that leads to better patient outcomes and to develop skills and understanding of scientific principles of research including research methods ethics managing conflicts of interest obtaining informed consent and recruiting and supervising participants.
  • Manage and participate in the Departments quality assurance activities to ensure that standards are maintained gaps in safety and quality standards are identified and to contribute to the continual improvement of the department and the service provided by the hospital. This includes audit activities morbidity and mortality meetings quality improvement programs peer review relevant committee participation root cause analyses infection control reporting and complaints investigations.
  • Actively monitor and manage own mental and physical wellbeing reporting concerns and seeking assistance when needed.
  • Meet College training program requirements in a timely fashion participate in educational experiences and actively seek to learn and obtain feedback in order to develop and understand your own skills knowledge and capability; and therefore to exercise judgement and know when to seek assistance.

Essential Requirements

  • MBBS or equivalent currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category
    Adequate postgraduate hospital medical experience (preferably 3 years or greater) and a level of clinical anaesthesia experience appropriate for the particular training hospitals role. This role is used to further progress towards a Fellowship qualification.
  • Willingness to undertake all aspects of the role as described in the PD including but not limited to participation in afterhours rosters and rotations to seconding hospitals and departments as required by the department
  • This position is subject to an appropriate supervision level which can be supported by the health agency. If the incumbents registration conditions include supervision requirements the level of supervision must be able to be supported by the health agency for this role.
  • Valid Working with Children Check
  • Cleared National Police Check
  • Current immunity status that complies with the NSW Health Policy Directive Occupational Assessment Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases (PD2024015) as amended is enforce or introduced from time to time
