The General Accountant assists the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) by overseeing the accounting operations of the agency providing financial information to management by researching and analyzing accounting data and preparing reports; maintaining the general ledger; monitoring the accounting activities of the accounting staff; and entering journal entries into the accounting system. Responsible for completing all grant and general accounting operations of the agency. The General Accountant will be crosstrained in all accounting department functions: AP/AR. The General Accountant will have accounting team members report through them as determined by the CFO.
DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Prepare examine and analyze accounting records financial statements and other financial reports to assess accuracy completeness and conformance to reporting and procedural standards.
Maintain the general ledger and other accounting records (fixed assets and depreciation designated funds endowment fund retirement fund and insurance etc.) in conformance with GAAP.
Track and prepare reports for grantor agencies verify invoices for allowable costs and prepare monthly grant requests for reimbursement.
Reconcile grant and program financial statements to the financial records by fund which may include multiple grants.
Bill on contract awards and prepare necessary billing documents as appropriate. Track due dates and prepare reports for grantor agencies verify invoices for allowable costs and prepare monthly grant requests for reimbursement.
Provide technical grant accounting support for program Directors as applicable.
Prepare required schedules reports and analyses including the trial balance for the annual financial audit.
Apportion the aggregate summary operating budget to line item detail operational units and months.
Prepare bank reconciliation on a monthly basis; prepare analyses of prepaid insurance investments and endowment transfers; reconcile receivables and payables with general ledger balances.

Assist with the preparation of the annual operating and capital budgets.
Train new accounting staff and act as a consultant for accounting finance and data processing issues; assist with the preparation of financial policies and procedures; fill in for accounting staff as necessary.
Operate within the guidelines of the Employee Handbook department Operations Manual and agency policies and procedures.
Demonstrate commitment to the social sector with a passion for MCHSs mission and vision.
Perform other duties as assigned by the CFO.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Bachelors degree in Accounting or Finance and four (4) years experience in the accounting or financial field; or Masters degree in Accounting Finance or a related field with experience in accounting or finance.
Experience with grant accounting AP and AR functions.
Experience in Human Services environment preferred but not required.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:
Computer and software applications (Sage Windows MS Office Internet applications etc.) necessary to perform the duties of the position.
Principles and practices of accounting and bookkeeping.
