Job Description

Project Type: Hybrid

Duration: 26 weeks (6 months). June 30 2025 December 23 2025

Location: Fort Collins CO

Housing: Must be secured by the intern/fellow. A housing stipend of up to $14000 per month will be provided.

Project Background: This position is with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service HQ Energy Program and will play a critical role in restoring lands impacted by energy development throughout the National Wildlife Refuge System. This position will be responsible for coordinating field investigations assessing and documenting impacts of past oil and gas activities assisting with reclamation and habitat restoration plans and building relationships with internal and external partners to successfully implement the Services national orphan well program.

Project Duties:

20% Lead field investigations on refuges throughout the country to assess and document the impacts of oil and gas activities on refuge lands
25% Utilize ArcGIS and Excel for research field data collection map creation and management of geospatial information
15% Build and maintain relationships with refuge staff regulatory agencies and external partners to coordinate projects and ensure compliance with environmental regulations and best management practices
20% Research well histories prepare reports and document findings and recommendations
20% Assist with developing and implementing plans for plugging operations reclamation and habitat restoration

Fellows will work and communicate with a Hispanic Access Program Associate during their fellowship. Fellows will be expected to participate in scheduled conference calls webinars and meetings conducted throughout their term. Fellows will capture photos and/or videos for reporting purposes and submit 35 blog posts highlighting their experience and development.

Desired Qualifications:

Recent college graduate with a bachelors degree in geology earth science or natural sciencesrelated program
Ability to work independently and communicate well verbally and in writing
Capacity for reading/understanding complex technical and legal documents
Skill working collaboratively with colleagues and partners
Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and ArcGIS software
Knowledge of or interest in natural resources/wildlife management geology energy development conservation or public lands governance
Proficiency with Microsoft Suite particularly Microsoft Excel
Enthusiasm for conservation and public lands; adaptable and willing to learn
Ability to conduct field work on refuges that may include hiking off trails in a variety of terrain and weather conditions

Minimum Qualifications:

Age 1830 up to 35 years for veterans
Possess US citizenship or US permanent residency
Must possess a valid US State drivers license
Must undergo a government background check if selected.
Bachelors degree in geology earth science or natural sciencesrelated program or equivalent professional experience in a similar field

Learning Goals:

  • Gain an understanding of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service structure and programs and the interplay between energy development and conservation
  • Develop knowledge of regulations techniques tools and resources used in the regulation of energy and mineral resources on public lands
  • Understand a variety of methods to communicate science and engage audiences across all demographics
  • Connect and develop networking ties with managers scientists conservation professionals resource specialists and partners throughout FWS

Mentoring:

The Fellow will have access to a variety of different employees styles and viewpoints throughout Refuge programs. There will be an effort to integrate the Fellow with individuals from other internship and Fellow programs. Fellows will have a mentor and support from at least one other refuge staff member. Supervisors mentors and support staff will work regularly with Fellows to provide opportunities for career development.

Working Conditions:

HOUSING DETAILS
A $1400/month stipend is provided to cover the cost of housing and a down payment for an apartment or house. HAF and appropriate FWS staff will recommend neighborhoods and realtors that can help find suitable housing depending on the Fellows needs and support the Fellows housing search.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT
Fellow will be placed at the USFWS Natural Resources Program Center in Fort Collins CO. Situated at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains one hour north of Denver Fort Collins is home to 150000 people Colorado State University fabulous outdoor recreational opportunities and numerous cultural and family attractions. WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work environment is primarily an indoor office environment with 612 weeks per year traveling and conducting fieldwork on National Wildlife Refuges. Fellows will participate in an initial orientation. There may be travel opportunities available for training regional workshops or field visits to Refuges or community partnership locations (depending on timing safety concerns and funding). The dresscode is business casual MondayThursday and casual on Fridays.

Stipend Benefits:

A biweekly stipend of $1600 based on a 40hour workweek
Monthly housing stipend up to $1400 per month
Travel reimbursement up to $500 to defray cost of relocation travel to and from duty station
Commuting stipend up to $25 biweekly

Travel expenses paid to participate in orientation
Funds available to support professional development opportunities that align with role and goals (training conference etc.)
Public Land Corp Eligibility after completing the internship PLC status provides special noncompetitive hiring status when applying for certain federal positions.
