The grade level counselor/clinician utilizes strong clinical skills and knowledge to provide leadership and guidance on socialemotional and behavioral health concerns to students and adults who support them at BACS. Through the use of sciencebased prevention programs educational workshops mediation conflict resolution restorative techniques individual and group counseling they focus on assisting students to be more successful in school develop positive relationships with peers/adults and build resilience to the challenges they face. The gradelevel counselor/clinician follows the same cohort of students through their high school years. The counselors are responsible for assessing student behavioral health needs providing crisis intervention referrals and individual/ group counseling with their students. They collaborate with students families other staff members and outside providers to develop and evaluate plans tailored to the needs of each student. The counselor collaborates with the Grade Level Deans other administrators other members of the Student Support Team teachers and staff to lead and encourage all adults to work with our students in ways that promote mutual respect trust and positive relationships. They utilize evidencebased standards and frameworks (such as CASEL SEL) to guide their approach. They help to identify and address any issues contributing to negative school culture developing creative and impactful ways to promote a positive school culture that is welcoming and inclusive. Finally they serve as an advisor to a group of 12 students guiding them daily through the development of their individual learning plans utilizing the Xello and BACS college and careerready curriculum. The advisor acts as the main liaison to their students for family members and fellow staff members. They assist them to meet annual portfolio requirements by coaching and assessing their applied learning and community engagement competencies. Blackstone Academy is a 23 year old public charter school serving 350 students from Central Falls Pawtucket and Providence Rhode Island.
