Duties and Responsibilities
Perform all functions of Assistant to Resident Engineer on contracts with scopes of work that include activities such as interstate resurfacing roadway reconstruction bridge rehabilitation and bridge replacement. Inspect construction operations to ensure conformance to contract provisions contract plans approved contractor submittals Standard Specifications Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and other technical standards. Prepare or approve all contract documentation both handwritten or computer generated onsite at construction projects or at the District Office.
The below listed duties and responsibilities are typical but not comprehensive. Other similar duties and responsibilities are as required and as directed. Duties and responsibilities of lower grade employees in the same career track are assumed by the incumbent when subordinate personnel are not available.
- Inspect construction operations to ensure that the work activities conform to all applicable contract documents required approved submittals and accepted good construction practice.
- Utilize survey equipment other measuring tools carpenters or smart levels etc. to confirm work is constructed to the required dimensions line and grade.
- Measure and calculate quantities of completed work. Complete pay slips and sketches for Contract Quantity Estimates.
- Document Contractors labor equipment and work performed and complete daily Field Inspection Reports.
- Sample test and obtain all required documents for materials incorporated into construction projects such as gravel brick stone reinforcement bar bolt assembly components and bitumen. Complete collect and upload all required forms and documentation in a timely manner.
- Monitor compliance with work zone safety and approved traffic management plans.
- Maintain electronic or hard copy contract records as applicable for the project. Keep records uptodate and prepared in accordance with current standard operating procedures. Upload electronic documents to internetbased collaborative platform if applicable in a timely manner and per contract requirements.
Roles will be filled in various District 4 departments based on operational needs and/or candidate strengths.
This position is eligible for a fivethousand dollar ($5000) signing bonus (Signing Bonus) if you are newly hired at MassDOT. Current MassDOT employees are not eligible for the Signing Bonus. The Signing Bonus will be paid in two parts: 1) $3000 (less applicable taxes) included in the employees first paycheck. 2) $2000 (less applicable taxes) after the successful completion of the employees probationary period.

Applicants must have at least (A) two years of fulltime or equivalent parttime technical or professional experience in civil engineering work in such areas as construction survey design transportation hydraulics structural sanitary drafting environmental highway architectural airport soils and materials or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I. An Associates degree with a major in civil engineering** or civil engineering technology** may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.*
II. A Bachelors or higher degree with a major in civil engineering** or civil engineering technology** may be substituted for the required experience.*
**NOTE: The terms civil engineering and civil engineering technology include related engineering disciplines such as construction survey hydraulics design transportation structural soils sanitary environmental drafting highway architectural mining airport and materials.
*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Based on assignment possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operators License may be required.
