Taproot Community Support Services (formerly WJS Canada) works to improve the lives of persons in their communities through a variety of programs and services.
Taproot Community Support Services Community Disability Services team provide safe and supportive living supports to persons with developmental disabilities encouraging them to build on their strengths further develop life skills overcome barriers and actively participatein their community.
There are three males who live in this 24hr communitybased support home. Together we help them overcome obstacles and work towards achieving their goals through problem solving routine planning and various support aids.
The Disability Services Worker (DSW) under supervision of their supervisor facilitates and monitors education and development programs for purposes of providing individuals in service with physical behavioural emotional and social supports/supervision in residence and in the community. DSWs develop relationships and act as a liaison with the community family members guardians and employers. The DSWs will support adults to gain independent living skills including assistance with daily living activities including meal preparation household chores laundry etc. and community access (accessing transportation to educational recreation and community programs/events). They also mentor and advocate for the client and empower them to be self reliant and confident. This position reports to the Team Leader.
During overnight hours the DSW ensures a consistent healthy and safe environment for the persons in care and are available to provide immediate support in crisis situations. The DSW sleeps at the clients residence and is available if needed to assist the client during overnight hours.
Scheduling:
One (1) temporary fulltime position:
14 hour shifts(6 hours awake 8 hours sleep)
7 shifts in a 14day rotation
Sleep shifts are paid at a reduced rate which be advised by hiring manger.
Duration of the position will be dependent on the incumbent
**ALLERGY ALERT: Cat in the program therefore staff should have no allergies and be comfortable around cats.
Support individuals with household chores life skills personal hygiene (if needed).
Provide supports as per the individuals care plan
Provide immediate support in crisis situations and use deescalation techniques to deal with behaviours
Administer medication first aid if/when necessary.
Use computer program to write objective daily reports and document notes & observations regarding the client

*** Prior to confirmation of employment all applicants must provide a copy of a current Criminal Record Check and/or Government Screening Letter. These checks vary depending on province and sector and will be communicated by the Program Hiring Team.
One (1) year experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities & complex needs.
High School Diploma
MANDATORY A valid Class 5 Driver License with clear driving abstract and reliable vehicle
A positive attitude and belief that persons with disabilities have the right / responsibility to define and pursue their life choices and pursue active participation and involvement in the community.
Skills in assisting individuals in anger management daily living self help etc.
First Aid/CPR Certification
Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Medication Administration Abuse Protocol Positive Behavioural Strategies Foundations and Disabilities Training
Knowledge of basic health and safety guidelines for personal health and safety.
