We facilitate restorative justice practices that equip justiceinvolved residents and clients with the skills they need to become contributing members of society upon release including treatment education and job training.
The Department of Corrections is accepting applications for a Teacher of Language Arts at Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland ME. This is a fulltime yearround 224day position with a primary purpose to teach Language Artsto justice to the youth residing at the facility.

Minimum Qualifications:
- A Bachelors Degree in Education or related field.
Licensing/Registration/Certification Requirements:(These must be met by all employees prior to attaining permanent status in this class)
- Maine ELA Teaching Certification (100) as issued by the Department of Education.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Develop curricula and educational plans
- Instruct classes
- Test students
- Evaluate student progress to help prepare them for educational or career pathways upon release.
- Evaluate student academic and social growth.
- Keep appropriate records and prepare progress reports.
- Maintain student discipline through adherence to accepted policies and regulations.
- Assist students in the development of desirable work habits attitudes and skills.
- Prepare lesson plans in accordance with curriculum.
- Meet with and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
- Plan a program of study that meets the individual needs interests and abilities of students.
- Create a classroom/career area environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students.
- Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals.
Desirable Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Department functions objectives policies and programs.
- Curriculum development classroom instruction and educational planning.
- Modern Juvenile security principles and practices.
Ability to:
- Teach Language Arts at the middle school or secondary school level along with general education courses.
- Assess student needs and develop/modify instruction as necessary.
- Work effectively as an individual and as part of a team.
- Work with and manage atrisk youth.
- Provide necessary accommodation and modifications for growth and success of all students.
