Course Description:

This course will provide an overview of the international law of foreign investment based on customary international law investment treaties and the interpretation of both by international tribunals. It will cover both substantive investor protection obligations and investorstate arbitration procedures.

The main focus of the course is an examination of the purpose context and evolution of the key provisions of international investment treaties and an analysis of the case interpreting these provisions. In addition it will examine the functioning and operation of the investorstate dispute settlement mechanisms found in most of these treaties.

Requirements:

The Common Law Section is seeking candidates who are leaders in the legal profession. An LL.B. J.D. or equivalent is for this position. Membership in the Law Society of Ontario in good standing is also . The successful candidate will have significant practical experience related to international investment law. Prior teaching experience will be considered an asset.

The Common Law Section reserves the right to select a candidate who does not fully meet each of these requirements where the candidates selection would be beneficial to the program the course the students or for a related reason.

The candidate may be required to teach this course either online inperson or hybrid mode at the discretion of the Faculty and in accordance with public health guidelines.

An acceptable level of education and/or experience could be viewed as being equivalent to the educational required and/or demonstrated experience.
