Department Background
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purposedriven science and Cornell Universitys second largest college. In keeping with Cornells Land Grant Mission to create and apply knowledge with a public purpose the Department of Food Science strives to apply the principles of science and engineering to ensure the nutritional value safety and quality of foods in the United States and around the globe. Our programs integrate the disciplines of chemistry biology nutrition physiology biotechnology and engineering to ensure that all people have access to healthy affordable food. Cornell communicators share a mission to enhance and preserve the universitys brand and reputation as a top research institution and a leader in higher education and to support and promote critical programs that serve the universitys teaching research and public engagement mission. Communication services are carried out through a matrixed organizational system in which University Relations houses the departments of News (Cornell Chronicle) Media Relations (pitching and servicing media requests) Brand ( multimedia production brand management and governance) Strategic Communications (communications plans key messaging social media management) and Cornellians (digital alumni publication). Communicators in colleges schools and units regularly collaborate with and consult University Relations departments. University Relations serves as a partner and resource for all college/unit communicators.
Position Summary:
This position is with the Produce Safety Alliance (PSA). Successful candidate will work very independently under general direction of the Produce Safety Alliance Director.
Individual will design print materials from concept to final delivery and collaborate with PSA Director PSA team and other external constituents to determine project needs and goals. Print materials may include; newsletters curricula and various educational media brochures posters displays flyers books ads and promotional materials.
Work with internal constituents such as the CALS Marketing & Communications Team Geneva Administrative Service Center University Purchasing and Division of Financial Affairs external constituents such as print and paper vendors as well as other universities the produce industry and the Federal Government in the design of food safety educational materials.
Work with PSA team to develop marketing and communication collateral that embraces CALS design and branding standards. Provide support for the PSA in all realms of communication including; developing and managing websites producing print and electronic educational materials interfacing with Cornells IT and Brand Department teams to ensure compliance with university design and graphic standards and maintaining consistency with CALS brand standards.
Develop and manage databases including collaboration with external organizations to share database input. Operate and maintain computer hardware and software programs in partnership with CALS IT. Create edit and manipulate graphics for use in multiple media formats and maintain a graphics library. Support all aspects of the PSA to ensure program success. This position will require occasional travel.

The position is located within the department of Food Science. This is a fulltime position at 100% FTE. This is a oneyear term appointment that is contingent upon available work funding and performance.
There is the opportunity to work remotely within New York State 2 days a week; an onsite presence in Geneva is required 3 days a week. Additional onsite presence may be required during trainings and other times.

Required Qualifications:
Must complete Cornell University Supervisory Development Training within one year of hire into the position.

Bachelors Degree and 35 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination.

Possess an effective organizational skill set with a strong attention to detail with ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with individuals across a broadspectrum including Universities the food industry and government in the design of food safety educational materials.
Basic knowledge and familiarity of food safety terminology is required.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work with others who have a wide range of technical expertise and information literacy; ability to convey technological information in laypersons terms.

Must possess and maintain a valid New York State drivers license and undergo a successful driver background check.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in graphic design or related field and 10 years of graphic design database development web development and print production management experience. Thorough knowledge of prepress file preparation printing systems and post print production is preferred. Comprehensive understanding of computer hardware including digital imaging systems (i.e. flatbed and slide scanners DSLRs) and ability to identify suitable image resolutions for their intended media. Must possess extensive software knowledge such as Creative Suite (InDesign Illustrator Photoshop Dreamweaver) FileMaker Pro and Microsoft Office on a Microsoft Windows platform. Extensive experience in relational database design using FileMaker Pro with a thorough knowledge of scripting as well as extensive knowledge of web design and construction using Drupal HTML and CSS.
