POSITION: Speech Language Pathologist Assistant

REPORTS TO: EC Director / Principal

Terms of Employment: 10 months

Pay Grade: 78




Nature of Work

A Speech Language Pathologist Assistant (SLPAssistant) in North Carolina schools primarily assists a licensed Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) by implementing therapy plans for students with speech and language disorders conducting screenings collecting data preparing materials completing documentation for Medicaid billing for all eligible students and collaborating with teachers and parents all under the direct supervision of the SLP while adhering to state regulations for SLPAssistant practice; requiring registration as an assistant with the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Speech and Language Pathologists and Audiologists by a supervising speechlanguage pathologist who is licensed by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Speech and Language Pathologists and Audiologists and subject to rules and regulations for speechlanguage pathology assistants adopted by the Board of Examiners.

The employee reports to the principal/s at his/her school/s if school based and to the Exceptional Childrens Preschool Handicapped Lead Teacher if centerbased. Both report to the Program Administrator of Exceptional Children and the Executive Director of Exceptional Children.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Key Responsibilities:

Direct Therapy Delivery:

  • Implement individualized therapy plans developed by the SLP focusing on areas like articulation language comprehension fluency and voice.
  • Conduct speech and language therapy sessions with individual students or small groups based on the SLPs instructions.
  • Utilize various therapeutic techniques and activities to address student needs.

Assessment and Data Collection:

  • Assist with administering speech and language screenings to identify potential communication disorders.
  • Collect data during therapy sessions including speechlanguage contact notes and anecdotal observations.
  • Prepare materials and set up the therapy environment for assessments.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Collaborate with teachers parents and other school staff to ensure students communication needs are met.
  • Communicate student progress and concerns to the supervising SLP and relevant stakeholders.
  • Attend IEP meetings and contribute to the development of individualized education plans.

Administrative Tasks:

  • Maintain accurate documentation of therapy sessions and student progress.
  • Prepare therapy materials and maintain inventory.
  • Coordinate student schedules and transportation for therapy sessions.
  • Complete random moment in time studies as required by EC program guidelines.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • Completion of an Associates Degree in SpeechLanguage Pathology Assisting from an accredited institution of higher learning community college or equivalent program; or evidence of successful completion of a Bachelors Degree from an accredited institution as well as evidence of successful completion of courses developed by the North Carolina Department of Community Colleges.
  • Registration as an assistant with the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Speech and Language Pathologists and Audiologists by a supervising speechlanguage pathologist who is licensed by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Speech and Language Pathologists and Audiologists and subject to rules and regulations for speechlanguage pathology assistants adopted by the Board of Examiners.
  • SLP Assistants must achieve a passing score on a competency test approved by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Speech and Language Pathologists and Audiologists.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements:

Must pass and qualify for work in PreK (NCDHHS Background Check)

Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment and tools including computer software computer hardware cables etc.

Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 5 pounds of force frequently and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work.

Light Work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree.

However if the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time the job is rated for Light Work.

Data Conception:

Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional structural or composite characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data people or things.

Interpersonal Communication:

Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information.

Includes giving and receiving instructions assignments and/or directions from superiors.

Language Ability:

Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence technical manuals newsletters trade journals etc.

Requires the ability to prepare reports forms training materials documentation etc. using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation grammar diction and style.

Requires the ability to speak to people with poise voice control and confidence.

Intelligence:

Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems collect data establish facts and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form; and to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Verbal Aptitude:

Requires the ability to record and deliver information to explain procedures to follow oral and written instructions.

Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages including computer terminology.

Numerical Aptitude:

Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; to multiply and divide; utilize percentages; understand and apply the theories of algebra and geometry.

Form/Spatial Aptitude:

Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length width and shape.

Motor Coordination:

Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using computer equipment.

Manual Dexterity:

Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as computer equipment. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Color Discrimination:

Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.

Interpersonal Temperament:

Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress.

Physical Communication:

Requires the ability to talk and to hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ears).

Must be able to communicate via telephone.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Strong understanding of speech and language development.
  • Ability to implement therapy plans with fidelity.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate documentation.

Important Considerations:

Supervision:

  • All activities performed by an SLP Assistant must be under the direct supervision of a licensed SLP.

Scope of Practice:

  • The specific responsibilities of an SLP Assistant may vary depending on the school district and the supervising SLPs clinical practice.

Ethical Conduct:

  • Adherence to the American SpeechLanguageHearing Association (ASHA) Code of Ethics is essential.
