PURPOSE OF JOB:
The Molecular Genetics Lab Assistant is responsible for supporting laboratory operations by preparing reagents specimen processing cleaning and maintaining equipment keeping accurate and detailed records and assisting in other housekeeping tasks.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential function. - Picks up daily specimens from the accessioning department and sorts them for testing.
- Builds assay batches in Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- Performs DNA extraction.
- Performs DNA quantification and quality control.
- Monitors reagents and supplies inventory for all laboratory workstations restocks as needed.
- Receives inventory shipments.
- Follows Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to prepare reagents and perform reagent quality control and phasein.
- Performs daily weekly and monthly preventive maintenance (PM) procedures and updates PM logs.
- Assists in resolving pending and problem sample lists.
- Manages hazardous waste disposal and waste labeling.
- Monitors Nitrogen gas tank levels and orders/receives new tanks as necessary.
- Crosstrains and develops knowledge of multiple specialties within department/lab.
- Assists Molecular Genetics Technicians as needed and performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or equivalent prior lab experience and/or 2 3 or 4year degree in Science related field preferred.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Laboratory skills with experience setting up running and operating lab instruments preferred but not required.
- Knowledge of medical and laboratory terminology and Genetics procedures and equipment helpful.
- General science background
- Attention to detail
- Organized with ability to multitask in a fastpaced environment
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Communication skills both verbal and written
- Positive cando attitude
- Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) as appropriate
- Personal computer skills including strong typing ability and proficient use of Microsoft Office
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Extensive standing phone and computer use
- Capable of standing continuously for up to 2 hours
- Extend and reach with hands and arms and use hands and fingers
- Occasionally required to bend kneel stoop or crouch
- May be required to lift move and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision color vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
- Hearing ability to effectively communicate via the telephone and in person
- Ability to communicate verbally on the phone and in person
- Fluency in the English language
- Extended hours may be needed
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Laboratory environment with potential biohazards present
- Normally receives general instructions on routine work detailed instructions on new assignments.
- Work under close to moderate supervision with limited latitude for independent judgment.
- Potential for exposure to agents known to cause zoonotic disease in humans and use of potentially hazardous chemicals as defined by the National Hazard Communication Standards. A complete list of such chemicals is available from department supervision.
