Job Description

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Sheridan School District is looking for a qualified caring individual for theschool year to be Sheridan High Schools Special Education Teacher. Provides small group instruction case manages students in classrooms coordinated intake and placement meetings facilitates IEP meetings and provides consultation to general education teachers.

Provide a classroom experience which contributes to individual and group excellence. Promotethe development of character leadership cooperation and respect for others that will make thestudents a better citizen.

The Special Education Teacher works in a program designed to provide a less restrictive alternative to the segregated special classroom. It provides an appropriate educational program for mild to moderately handicapped students who require support services in order to benefit from regular education.

The Special Education teacher provides students with direct remedial instruction in academic subjects cognitive processing and appropriate social skills. In addition to these specific individualized programs the staff may assist regular classroom teachers with selection of appropriate curricula and the development of behavior management programs. Students enrolled in the Special Education have a regular education homeroom and spend a part of their instructional day in the regular classroom. The Special Education teacher works under the supervision of the Special Programs Director.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Candidate must hold an Oregon Teaching Certificate with Special Education endorsement;
  • Experience preferred;
  • Background in SEL conflict resolution and technology are desired
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations for special education;
  • Training or willingness to learn direct instruction techniques;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with general education teachers;
  • Continually assesses job results and student outcomes.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Develops an Individualized Educational Program (IEP) in basic academic skills and appropriate social behavior to ensure specific skill development.
  2. Conducts annual parent/teacher conference to revise IEP.
  3. Provides assistance with behavior management programs established in regular classrooms.
  4. Collects data from systematic observations in the classroom.
  5. Integrates students into the regular classroom for as much of the day as possible.
  6. Provides an appropriate learning environment to facilitate eventual reintegration.
  7. Assists with the reintegration progress and monitor progress to ensure success.
  8. Complies with specifications established by PL 94142.
  9. Participates in multidisciplinary staffing meetings as necessary.
  10. Provides an appropriate positive learning environment which will enable students to reach their full potential.
  11. Facilitates positive interaction among students staff and parents.
  12. Assists parents in understanding childs potential for success.
  13. Orients parents to classroom procedures that could be reinforced and extended to the home.
  14. Records and analyzes continuous assessment data showing student progress.
  15. Provides behavior management programs to control atypical behavior and increase appropriate behavior.
  16. Trains and supervises educational assistants.
  17. Provides information to assist in purchasing of appropriate materials.
  18. Fulfills all appropriate responsibilities assigned to the Classroom Teacher.
  19. Fulfills other related duties as assigned or assumed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Completion of course work satisfying the requirement for issuance of a valid Oregon Teaching License with Special Education: Generalistendorsement.

Demonstrated competency through student learning internship or the equivalent or classroom experience.

Demonstrated ability to support and maintain school and district policies and to successfully plan and complete assigned responsibilities within identified resources and timelines.

Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and appropriately in speech and in writing in accord with educational standards.

Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team setting with school staff.
